ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

So come October 1st, will payments to the ATO with credit cards be surcharge free?!

Please say yes :)

How does this surcharge ban affect Sniip? Will the surcharge be called something else?
Guess it's a wait and see... What happens to all these payment processors.

I'm going hard till 30 September then let's see if I just switch to EFT for all payments

I assume the current retail pricing model for Sniip et al includes some fraction that is their own transaction cost, which may be reduced by the changes, but they charge for the service (direct earn is reduced or unavailable) rather than interchange per se so they may well be allowed to continue, with or without a commensurate reduction.

But the banks may impose new limits on them too, which may impact the viability of their business model.

I don't know the answer to this, but I suspect the fees charged by Sniip etc. are not covered by the ban. They aren't a surcharge on a card payment, as such, but a processing fee that includes extra services. The costs are also very clearly advertised.

I'm of a different opinion - they charge a different amount depending on the payment method, so implicitly they are passing on the cost of acceptance. I would call it (mostly) a surcharge on that basis. In a surcharge-less world, they charge the same for Amex (eventually) as Visa as Mastercard Debit as EFT.

I saw a promo for B2BPay for new users, valid until 31/5/2026:
Min $10k gets 10k Qantas points
Min $25k gets 25k Qantas points
Min $50k gets 50k Qantas points

ATO fees are:
 MasterCard – Domestic Credit 0.70%
Visa – Domestic Credit 0.78%
You also earn 1 Qantas Point for every $7 paid by card to the ATO.

This is lower than the ATO fee (via Government EasyPay) of:
MasterCard – domestic credit 0.92%
Visa – domestic credit 0.96%

Am I missing something? This is actually cheaper than paying the ATO directly, plus you earn Qantas points through B2B Pay (1428 points on a $10k bill), plus the regular cc earn points.

As far as I can tell, the card processing fee is all you'll pay. The ATO is a unique biller with a different fee to the below:

What does B2Bpay cost?

There is no cost to join B2Bpay and no fees other than a normal tax-deductible card processing fee. The applicable card processing fee replaces any surcharge or MSF charged by the biller and the fee is displayed when you add your card details and before you confirm a one-off payment.

Visa / Mastercard standard cards: 1.2% (after company tax deduction: 0.84%)
Visa / Mastercard premium and corporate cards: 1.55% (after tax deduction: 1.09%)
American Express cards: 2.25% (after tax deduction: 1.57%)
Diners Club cards: 2.4% (after tax deduction: 1.68%) Bank Account payments: (0.65% (after tax deduction: 0.46%)

Different fees (or no fees) may apply with some billers. The c ard processing fee will always be displayed prior to processing online payments.
All fees exclude GST
B2Bpay provides you with a Tax Invoice for the card processing fee so you can access company tax deductions (talk to your accountant for advice). Different fees (or no fees) may apply with some billers.

When you use B2Bpay to receive payments, there is no cost to you (unless you choose to absorb the card processing fees).
