Are QF aircraft slowing down?

Ive just had yet another notification of flight time changes – for December /January bookings.

BNE-SYD is now taking 10 minutes longer and BNE-MNL just five minutes. Sometimes it ARR time that changes and sometimes its DEP time. No change to aircraft type etc.

I’m wondering why they are fiddling with the schedule. Perhaps slowing aircraft a little to save fuel? Attempting to get the “on time” % score higher?

I sent an SMS with the same question to my neighbour a QF pilot: his only advice was that there were a lot of schedule changes going on at the moment.

Its no big deal .... perhaps. I’m asking more out of curiosity.

With thanks
Gary

I'd say it's to allow for ground based delays (longer taxi times /queues etc) than reduced airspeed.

I noticed that my QFlink flights out of SYD had increased in time some months ago. My guess was that it was their coping mechanism for the T3 processes now in SYD and maintain/improve %on time performance. Rex have been marketing their on time performance pretty heavily in Armidale. Your BNE-SYD flight changes don't support my opinion though.

sure are - when I was younger adl mel on AN or QF was 1 hour - now we are getting close to 90 mins!

Haven't flown into BNE for a while but every flight was delayed landing there about a year ago when I was a regular. That was down to the new runway construction though wasn't it? How is that progressing?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Runway construction..... pull the other one :). The delays are because they have not built a second runway yet. Construction* has started but the runway won't be open for another 6-7 years.

* definition of construction in this case is some enabling works and preparation for the soil loading to consolidate all the soft material before any meaningful construction can take place.

I have not had delays coming into BNE for a long time now. There are occasional announcements of being told to slow down by BNE air traffic control but we usually arrive on time and sometimes earlier.

The delays were due to the construction of the third runway which meant the second runway had to be closed for some time putting that traffic back onto the one remaining runway.

They have built a second runway and this one will be the third FYI.

The second runway reopened up a couple months ago (this year) as it was closed for the sand pipeline to be put underneath it in order to build the new runway. The second runway (cross runway) can take up to 737-800's and you should have noticed a reduction in delays recently at BNE

Nope. I was delayed as usual on my last flight into BNE. Ended up doing two laps of the Gold Coast. OK, there is the smaller cross runway, but this is not the much talked about Second Parallel Runway.

MEL-CBR is now listed as 1hr 05, pretty sure it wasn't that a few months ago....

MEL-CBR has always been 1hr, 05 mins, except when operated by a Dash 8-300. The reverse CBR-MEL flight is usually 1hr, 10mins though.

I got one, 11.30am is the scheduled for my flight from ADL to SYD to meet the 15.45pm SYD to AKL.
Time of departure from Adelaide is now 11am, to get to SYD half an hour earlier.
Do you think the online system of NZ's Australia website allowed me acknowledge the acceptance of the time change.
Nope, had to phone the NZ 13 (Australia) phone number, and wait about 20 mins while the CSA changed the bit that said I accepted the change in timing, and then had to reissue another itineary!

I received notification of a change for a December flight SCL - SYD - it is now scheduled to be arriving 10 mins later into Syd. The time change was so minimal that it took me a minute to figure out what the actual change was that I was being advised of.

I've had those subtle time changes in the past which have taken me longer than the difference in schedule to figure out.

The second runway has been there forever. It will take light aircraft and corporate style jets.

It cannot be used for 737-800 for take off and is rarely or ever used for 737-800 for landings. Loads would have to be very light before it was even considered.

Curious as to why you say it cannot be used for 738 take offs, having been in one that did?

My QF94 in January has been moved forward 40 minutes to depart 10:50pm - Scheduled arrival time has not changed?!!??!
