ANZ platinum insurance changes

Hospital expenses are usually "incidentals" like paying for a TV, or a newspaper, not for the actual bed/medical care.

I'd recheck that, I had believed the $8K was in relation to"expenses", not authorised medical treatment.

There is also a daily limit for these "expenses".

[Scurries off to check the PDS.]
OK, the PDS uses the term "Hospital Compensation" and has a limit of $75 per day, see page 30. This is a payment for each day you are hospitalised and has nothing to do with authorised medical treatment in a hospital.

Section A3 - Hospital compensation

When does the cover begin and end?

The cover under this section begins when you are hospitalised
overseas and ends when you are discharged from hospital.
What is covered?

We will cover you if you are hospitalised overseas for more
than 48 continuous hours because of an illness or injury which
first happened while you were outside Australia on your trip.
What is the most we will pay?

We will pay $75 for every 24 hours up to a maximum of $8,000.
Additionally, where an injury is as a result of a mugging attack
that has been reported to police we will pay you $500.
Section A1 – Overseas medical and dental expenses

When does the cover begin and end?

The cover under this benefit begins when you commence
your trip and ends when you return to your home in
Australia or when the period of insurance ends, whichever
happens first.

What is covered?

We will cover you for:

(a) medical, hospital and ambulance expenses you incur as a
result of an illness, injury or death; or

(b) dental treatment expenses you incur as a result of an injury
to healthy natural teeth;

that you suffer while you are overseas, or onboard a cruise
that includes a scheduled stopover at an international port.
We will pay medical and dental expenses which we believe
are medically necessary to treat the illness or injury.

Thank you for the replies. I have re-read the PDS and my interpretation is that hospitalisation is covered under the unlimited overseas medical and dental expenses ie Section A1 of PDS. Section A3 Hospitalisation compensation limited to $8000 refers to the incidentals. That is my current interpretation and I will call to confirm this.

This whole issue highlights another problem, ie when you call the insurance people you may not get a person at the other end of call who understands the policy fully. Definitely the person I spoke to earlier in the week did not fully understand the benefits of this policy. Hopefully, if I ever need to contact this insurer whilst overseas, I get someone who knows what they are talking about.

Thank you for your input and interpretations, it has helped greatly.

Cheers:cool:

Thanks for all the info guys. with this sort of cover you can never have enough info I reckon.

Rang them up today in regards to cover skiing as it is not clearly stated as an exclusion and they confirmed that they do offer coverage for ski trips, which is great for me. Also, coverage lasts 6 months each trip as opposed the 180 days on Amex. Now my next question is, has anyone ever needed to make a claim with this travel policy? Is it an easy process?

I'm in the process of making a claim, one of the biggest pains in the butt is that they don't reimburse you getting information they require (not sure if this is industry standard...)

So when i had to contact one of my brother's doctors about medical records (I had to fly back for his funeral) and the doctor charged $120 for providing the records they said I can't claim for that... When they require me to go and get a quote for damage assessment/fixing my camera that was also damaged on the trip they won't reimburse me for that quote either and one place was going to charge me $150 so in the process of trying to find a cheaper place... I am still getting bits and pieces together as I put in the initial claim and they have come back asking for more information, including from US Airways about the USDM miles program (which I am also trying to claim reimbursement or replacement of points) so will see how it all goes... Its been dragging on a bit trying to get the requisite info out of people to supply them and then me getting around to chasing info up...

Oh yeah! But Amex also has restrictions during the calendar year which is a bit of a bummer...

I noticed that the 250$ Activation still exists; make sense.

I am only using the card to make a Hertz reservation and not using it for other travel expenses.

The Hertz rental (Australia-Domestic) is 208$ for the week but then goes up to 270$ once location fee, taxes, admin recovery fee etc. are factored in.

The ANZ PDS says 250$ (inclusive of taxes). Am I reading it correctly that because I am paying 270$ (with the location fee, taxes, admin recovery fee etc.) factored in I am meeting the 250$ requirement?

Any insight would be helpful thanks.

I'm a little confused - are you asking if a car rental in Australia would activate the overseas travel insurance on the card? Because the answer would be "no".

To activate the travel insurance for a specific overseas trip, you need to pre-pay $250 or more of overseas travel expenses (e.g. flights, tours, hotels, etc) for that trip. Domestic travel does not count.

Thanks Opusman.

I want to take advantage of the Rental Car Insurance portion of the benefit only. I am covered for all other travel insurances with my primary card.

I have a reservation with Hertz Australia (I am Australian) and to avoid paying the daily excess charge when I rock up to the counter I want to use the ANZ Platinum card.

Question then is 2 fold:

a) I haven't pre-paid anything the only transaction will be for the actual rental vehicle on the day of pickup
b) If I am okay with a) then have i met the minimum amount for activation?

thanks!

The domestic rental car insurance does not need to be specifically activated. You don't even need to use the ANZ card to pay for the rental car.

Don't want to get in to the weeds too much but I just confused myself and burned an hour reading with no lightbulb moment.

I often read that car rental companies will make you take out comprehensive insurance. Specifically, in relation to the CitiSignature card this is my scenario.
Right now my car rental for next week looks like this:

Vehicle Subtotal270.44 AUD
Total Approximate Charge270.44 AUD
Rate is guaranteed. Taxes, fees and extras, if not included in the Rate, are subject to change.
Rate Code : SLDW
ACCIDENT EXCESS REDUCTION
daily19.64 AUD
MAXIMUM COVER
daily29.09 AUD
Premium Emergency Roadside Service
daily3.00 AUD

In relation to this Credit Card; do i need to buy the 2nd item under optional i.e. Maximum Cover if I want to protect myself?
The only one I can 'skip' because the credit card covers is the 1. Accident excess reduction?

Any help would be welcomed ..my head hurts!

The domestic rental car insurance does not need to be specifically activated. You don't even need to use the ANZ card to pay for the rental car.

You'd need to find out what the options offer you. Accident Excess Reduction is probably what the ANZ card gives you anyway. Maximum cover probably includes that plus other things you don't need* like personal injury and theft from the vehicle. But you should definitely check for yourself.

Basically you just have to take out all the insurances on offer that result in there being only an excess to pay for loss or damage. Then the ANZ policy can reduce that excess. But having said that, I don't think it's possible to rent a car in Australia without it coming with comprehensive insurance already.

* in terms of activating the ANZ cover that is - whether you need these otherwise is up to you

Hertz cars in Australia come with comprehensive insurance included in the base rental price (it is not possible to rent a car without comprehensive insurance in Australia). This insurance (note it's technically not insurance, it's a waiver, as you need a Financial Services licence to sell insurance in Australia) has an Accident Damage Excess (ADE) of ~ $4,000. Hertz also has a Single Vehicle Accident (SVA) Excess of $2,200 payable in addition to the ADE if you damage the car and no other is involved (e.g. If you hit a kangaroo). Accident Excess Reduction reduces the ADE to ~$500 and SVA is still applicable. Max cover eliminates both ADE and SVA.

ANZ Car Rental will cover ADE if you have an accident involving another car. It will not cover a cent if you have an accident not involving another car, which is the worst thing about it. I do not rely on it if renting from Hertz, only when renting from Avis, Budget and Europcar, as they do not have an additional SVA which would void the ANZ car rental cover.
