any special offer on NAB Qantas credit card?

Seems NAB is replaced Gold Visa with the equivalent Gold Amex+Visa in the post-March 2009 world.

yep that's right. and there is also a platinum option. Although with a $290 annual fee I'm not sure how they hope to get people to switch from the Earth platinum (for example) and possibly other QF direct earn cards.

Well...I think the question is whether $40 extra (Comparing to Earth Plat) can justify the extra benefit of domestic travel insurance, hotel burglary, transport accident and price protection...Plus the extra 0.1666 points when using Visa over MC.

I guess if you travel often domestically, then the $40 for extra insurances can be quite a worthy deal.

Personally I can't really see much value in the insurances. Hotel Burglary is already covered under my home and contents. Travel accident issurance seems pointless domestically - its covered by medicare, free hospitals and private health at the worse case. Price protection - I already search out the best advertised price on purchases. Which leaves the domestic travel insurance which is actually flight inconvience insurance it seems for when luggage goes missing. If I want the extra 0.166 then I'll continue to use the gold visa that I get for free* from NAB.

Earth Platinum has offered a big promotion to get in customers and some fine print insurances are not going to overcome the inertia and headline annual fee difference to get most customers to switch. IMO

Well this is only for your circumstances, but I'm talking in general in here. Not everyone has insurance covered as broadly as you do and may not have the time to exercise the best price practice for their purchase.

What I posted is simply a comparison between Earth Plat & NAB Plat and by no mean stating which card is better.

Just to clarify which promotion are you talking about? If you are referring the promotion which offers extra points per $, it is going to end in 4 months. So by the time of replacement, the offer will be lapsed by then and provide no extra benefit unless you change your card now. (Which you will overlap your annual card fee)

I'm not really sure what you're saying here. Sorry
Yes, I was referring to the current promotion of extra points and also 20,000 bonus points. My contention is that this will attract people to the earth platinum. Once attracted inertia will result in people sticking with the Earth Platinum, because the NAB coard doesn't offer anything substanially better and it cost more. This is regardless of the promotion ending or the timing thereof.

What I was saying is quite self explanatory...and once again, I'm using a generic approach rather than narrow down to a group of "professional's" point of view.

While Westpac's (WBC) promotion is quite attractive I must say, but there will still be opportunity cost involved for card hopping.

For example: foregone the annual fee which has already paid to Nab and open a new account with WBC and incur a new annual fee. Not to mention the credit check etc in a tighten lending criteria environment.

I'm not denying here that NAB may result in losing a proportion of its credit card business because of WBC's promotion but I do not believe it will be to a large extend.

Therefore, there is no right or wrong on this topic. It is simply a matter which product is more suitable to each individual's circumstances. We must admit that not every single credit card user is points chaser/card hopper.

Afterall, we all know that NAB hardly offers any big promotion like Westpac/Citibank/AMEX because NAB's foundation is based on the loyalty of the consumers and their strong relationship with various sized business.

Once attracted inertia will result in people sticking with the Earth Platinum, because the NAB coard doesn't offer anything substanially better and it cost more

On the side note: I do not pay annual fee for life on my NAB platinum card for life. Therefore I have more reason to stay with NAB.

Ah, I understand now. Must of had a seniors moment

I guess, as new products, I was making a year zero assumption that people take up one because of the promotion. Rather then from the POV of switching to get the promotion. So I was talking about something different, anyway.

Yep, I remember you got the platinum fee free. I still haven't asked, so I'm stuck at getting Nab gold free. Once the Earth promotion ends it'll be time to talk to NAB about their platinum. I'm also hoping that they might decide to award our relationship by that time and include the Platinum with my package.

For those who want to get a free platinum card this might help:

A guy at work had the citibank gold and was royally p*&ssed with the changes made re QFF points. He only got the card 3 months ago and it wasn't made clear to him how things were going to change.

Anyways, he has a relationship with ANZ and did a deal to get the platinum ANZ QF card where he's paying $55 for it - seems the package he had would cover up to $150 so he just pays the difference. You might want to see if NAB will do somethign similar.

Looks like a small offer is out there. I received an (unsolicited ?) NAB Qantas Amex Gold Card today. (I had asked for a NAB Velocity card).

It comes with an offer of

- win 500k qff points;
- a bonus 1,000 qff points if I use the card for 3 or more 'eligible transactions' in the first 30 days.

ouch. That NAB brochure says

- spend over 10k per month on amex, v or mc - 'no further points'
- spend $3k-$10k: visa and mastercard pay 1 point per $3, Amex pays 1 point per $2
- spend up to $3,000 per month, get 2 points per $2 with Amex and only 2 points per $3 with visa and m/card.

Is anyone staying with the NAB, and if so why?

The NAB Platinum Qantas card has 1.5 points per dollar for Amex unlimited spend and 2points per $3 unlimited spend for visa.

Thats what I went for because it was convenient with my other banking.

Yep, the points are rubbish. But they are exactly the same earn rates as for the previous NAB Gold Rewards card. I guess because this qantas gold card is replacing the Gold Rewards card.

I'm sticking with it because it is effectively free for me as part of a package with NAB. My need for it is basically to get a visa for SWMBO for when AMEX doesn't work. That is the about my only usage - the supplementary visa. A free supplementary card is much cheaper that $50 to $100 for some of the alternatives

But I have done my 3 transactions on AMEX to get the 1000 bonus points and entry for the draw. Funny thing is that the wife's supplementary cards also came with the same offer of 1000 bonus points for 3 transaction. I wonder if she will earn it or if it is only the primary account holder?
