My experience with the Platinum Charge travel insurance is:

First travel insurance claim in the last 8 years, Chubb is a pain in the backside to deal with. It is now with AFCA and they are still unwilling to negotiate. It will probably end up in a determination at the rate it is going.

Going to have to write to Amex Executive Customer Care soon at the way this has played out.

My experience last month:

$150 claim for Travel Delay. QF35 long delay at MEL - checked to Park Royal and had lunch. Paid within a fortnight. Biggest drama was getting Qantas to provide a letter confirming actual delay (they sent letters based on the rescheduled time which was further delayed).

$450 claim for iPhone screen. Paid within a week. Initially couldn’t understand the high $500 limit for this benefit until I broke my iPhone X screen and they seriously charged $498 to repair it!!

So all in quite happy.

Any additional details to give some insight into the types of claims that cause troubles?

Thanks for the feedback. I've got the letter already so hopefully that shouldn't hold them up.

Have used the screen insurance, was fantastic. Paid within 5 days also. Samsung Note 8.

Update:

All approved and money is on its way to my nominated account. Received email at 7am this morning.

Thats both the travel and screen insurance I've used now.

My wife is pregnant, does anyone know if I will be safe with the Amex Platinum Insurance? After we have paid for the flights on the card, do we need to do anything to activate the insurance?

Hi Motlking,

Pre-existing Medical Condition means:
1. any past or current Medical Condition that, during the 2 years prior to You booking any Trip has given rise to symptoms, or for which any form of treatment or prescribed medication, medical consultation, investigation or follow-up/check-up has been required or received; or
2. any cardiovascular or circulatory condition (e.g. heart condition, hypertension, blood clots, raised cholesterol, stroke, aneurysm) that has occurred at any time in the five (5) years prior to You booking any Trip; or
3. any pregnancy if, at the time of any Trip, is within eight (8) weeks of the estimated date of delivery.

That's the only mention of it. Obtained from:

Edit: There's nothing you need to do to activate, just purchase the flights on the card. Note: not sure where that stands with the pregnancy.

Regarding the travel inconvenience cover, more specifically for a missed flight connection the sum insured is as follows:
• Additional hotel accommodation and restaurant meals or refreshments up to $700
• Emergency purchase of essential

So in the case of a missed connection where the airline will not provide assistance (assuming separate tickets), the only coverage provided by Amex is hotels and meals and the new airfare would be out of pocket. Am I reading this correctly?

That's correct

That's correct
Thanks Quattro.
We have a family trip booked over Xmas/New years and we'll be flying JFK-LAX on AA in J connecting to LAX-BNE-SYD on QF in J. These were booked separately. The connection is approximately 12 hours but you just never know with weather at that time of year. Are there any insurance providers that would cover for missed connection in this scenario?

Unfortunately I'm not sure. In previous posts in this thread it's the first I've been made aware of such an exclusion (have never been in your situation re. flights booked with different carrier). Citibank prestige cards have this incorporated. However, not much help to you being you have already booked.

I wonder if these changes will filter down to AU.
hmm...

Will be going to Taiwan next year. Booked Perth - Taipei return tickets with the Amex Platinum charge... While i'm in Taipei we will be taking a mini trip to japan (this will be paid for by the in-laws and therefore not on my card). Am I still covered for the trip to japan?
Anyone else does this before and can confirm coverage?

Amex recently confirmed to me that if unable to pay for trip (eg from a site like STA travel) via Amex, cardholder and/or supps are still covered. I checked this for mstrandye1 as the most recent T&Cs don't specify this

I would not believe it if not in writing. Would you?

It is written in the policy but just a bit hidden. Rather than the Activation of Insurance section, under the definitions for Domestic Trip and International Trip, they have the following wording:

If You are unable to use Your American Express Platinum Card to purchase your Domestic (International) Trip because it is not accepted by your chosen provider, You will still be eligible for cover if You can supply proof of purchase and the name and address of the travel provider.

It has moved from fast track to complex because AFCA understated the complexity of the case. It now has to go through mediation, primarily judgement and final judgement.

Assuming I am not bounded by any NDA then I can disclose the case once it has gone through the AFCA process and the ruling is public.
