AMEX Plat Charge companion card

Oh if it hasn't been mentioned - I know why the online form doesn't work - Amex classify the Reserve and the Explorer as the same 'type' of card - so if you have Explorer you'll never be able to apply online for the Reserve from what I can work out

I don’t have an Explorer, just the Plat Charge..

I was able to swap from Velocity Platinum to Reserve without needing to make a new application. At the time, they presented it as a favour for my not receiving my Reserve application by mail after multiple attempts to send it. I was happy with this as it avoided an unnecessary Equifax check.

Looking at maybe getting the Platinum in the missus' name for the better ongoing earn after April, and then dropping my Explorer before it renews.

There's no mention of Reserve (or anything else as a "companion" or "complimentary" or whatever) that I can find on the official Amex site. Is it definitely still available or is it only grandfathered in for previous holders? I wouldn't probably spend on it (except for optimising Amex Offers and Shop Small) but the extra travel credit would be good.

It’s still available. They also mentioned it in the mail out they did when announcing the Platinum Charge annual fee increase.

Still have to apply for it after you’ve got your Platinum Charge. They have to post you an application. They tried to post it to me a couple of times then gave up and let me do a product transfer from Velocity Platinum to Reserve. Apparently, some cards aren’t eligible for product transfer. Glad Velocity platinum was so avoided a credit inquiry for the Reserve.

I can't recall where but there's an online application somewhere for the Plat reserve

An companion card will earn at different rate to plat is not very logical on top of 2 transactions required for redeming travel credits.

It’s free and gives you a $400 travel credit, but I guess that’s not a huge deal? Also provides actual ‘credit’.

No requirement of two transactions for redeeming the travel credit.

You need one transaction per travel credit as, per the rules, Amex do not allow you to combine the credits. I do note, however, that there anecdotal evidence on this forum of that having happened but never for me.

As a holder of the Charge, Reserve and Edge, I have always had to make 3 separate bookings to redeem all 3 credits and only the Charge credit can be done over the phone.

I booked over the phone, used my Reserve credit, but paid for the remainder using my Charge card.

Same experience about combining credits though.

Anyone know how long does it get approved for the Reserve?

There is an online application form to apply it. Dose it still do the instant online approval or need to wait for back office processing?

Having recently been approved for the Platinum Charge I was disappointed to then not be approved for the Platinum Reserve as it makes up a large part of offsetting the annual fee.

Does anyone have any advice on when to try again? I currently have a Qantas Ultimate, so I believe I’m already at the level required by the Reserve, but perhaps they think I have too much risk with two other credit cards (Visa and MasterCard). I am looking to cut this to one in the near future and my goal would be to close the Qantas Ultimate if I got the Reserve, so perhaps they will let me transfer it instead, similar to above?

That is disappointing not to be approved for the reserve card - wonder if it has anything to do with tighter credit approval processes now?

Call that number and see if they can review your application. It might be some small technical thing that got it rejected.

I have WAY too much credit with AmEx (and the Charge card as well). I applied for Reserve and got approved for only $3,000 limit! (as a baseline, I have over $30k limit on my Edge alone).

On previous occasions when I applied for a new card when already at the limit of credit AmEx was happy to extend, they were very accommodating in reducing credit limit of extant cards and approve the new application (to keep their exposure constant). Maybe give them a call and ask whether they can do the same for you?

That sounds like a very sound approach and likely to work

That was limit given to me when I applied for the Reserve. I was perfectly happy with that since I only got it for the travel credit and the odd statement credit offer.
