If you have to pay 2.4% surcharge then is it worth it for the points?

Wasn't that the merchant fee? But it's what I'm trying to work out....I'm only an intermittent user of Paypal and I'm not sure of their fee system and it's not immediately obvious reading their T and C.
I think I'll do a few test payments and work out the costs of points for myself. I do have a couple of offers of extra points per transaction at the moment and this might be a way to wangle a few extra transactions with the extra points covering the Paypal fees, whatever they are

The *merchant* fee starts at 2.4%: https://www.paypal.com/au/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-receiving-fees-outside
Purchase payments received (monthly)Fee per transaction
$0.00 AUD - $5,000.00 AUD (base rate)2.4% + $0.30 AUD
$5,000.01 AUD - $15,000.00 AUD2.0% + $0.30 AUD
$15,000.01 AUD - $150,000.00 AUD1.5% + $0.30 AUD
> $150,000.00 AUD1.1% + $0.30 AUD

I can only assume Paypal negotiate lower rates for corporations like Telstra.

I thought they meant that I have to pay the merchant fee of 2.4%. I'll also do some test payments. Reading some of the other posts does paying by PayPal circumvent some of the problems people have paying utilities directly and not getting points?

It may. It is an area for exploration. It also depends on which biller takes what payment method.
Having recently learnt what happens when these bits of information get into the hands of rapacious "cows in plate shops" I suggest that we allow the community to explore these things themselves and only gently hint in public what is subsequently achieved. Also PMs work well in these circumstances

Please take that comment only as a SUGGESTION. Feel free to post what you want on AFF. Just be mindful that 1) the companies read AFF and 2) that there are people here that will use a system to breaking point

No ... except if the merchant surcharges.
There used to be an Australian competitor to Paypal called Paymate I think .. they never took off, as they charged the buyer and the seller the fee!

Paymate are still around, and I think they got rid of the 3% buyer fee.

Excellent, just added my AMEX to my account. If only I could use my AMEX to Bpay bills.

seems like only MC and Visa

any reports from users?

I once looked at accepting PayMate, and asked them when they will be adding Amex. Their response was that it was 'too expensive' (despite charging both the buyer *and* seller a fee at the time (~6% in total))... I haven't been back to their website since haha!

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Are you able to now use AMEX for one off payments? (Call me paranoid, but I don't like companies storing my credit card details.) It would be handy to pay my Telstra bills by Amex with no surcharge (especially since CommBank took away points earn for BPay.)

It would only be fair for this to occur - when purchasing from US based sights AMEX is an option in PayPal until you change your address to Australia.

I've been able to add my Amex no problem.

Most companies don't charge a surcharge for PayPal, so this could be a good way around it for Amex.

North Sydney Council puts a 1% surcharge on PayPal (and Visa and Mastercard, but don't accept AMEX). Could be a way to pay them on AMEX :)

paid my first bill through postbillpay.com.au today... BY DINERS!!

Nice - did you pay via Paypal (as a Discover card), or did your biller actually authorise Diners for direct POSTbillpay payments? :)

Contacted Amex just now and the CSA on the phone double checked with his supervisor - can confirm that it's an "everyday spend" item, so Paypal purchases run through Amex earn 1 MR point per AUD$1.

I didn't ask about when Paypal bills in foreign currency, though - if they bill in USD and Amex does the conversion, then I can imagine that you'd get 2 MR points per dollar - but didn't confirm this on the phone.

Only had VISA /Mastercard or Discover Options just then.
