Sooo, I need to be clear about my insurance cover. Not having dealt w' amex before, what would people suggest re my cover and getting it in writing somehow from Amex, it's not something I'm just to skate over?

Have a look at the insurance brochure you received - it will have a number for insurance related enquires and you need to call this number and not the number on your card as the insurance is provided by a third party.

They should be able to talk it through with you... It should just be like buying via a travel agent, however if you make a claim you'll need to show connecting prof that A) the ticket was bought from eBay B) the ticket is in your name and complies with the rules (usually full cost and leaving/arriving from Australia) C) that the eBay purchase was made on your applicable Amex card.

Don't expect them to provide you advice in writing - they would spend thousands of hours a year proving 'opinions' if they did this. The call centre for the insurance company is usually pretty good though and will talk you through it also best to actually read the brochure and make sure you meet the other qualifying points like age and pre-existing medical conditions

Noticed something strange - I've used my Reserve card to pay for a local merchant, 1 point per $1. I've used my Plat Charge to pay for my council rates via PostBillPay, obviously a local merchant and it's ended up being 2 points per $1. Odd.

The only other time I've managed to get 2 points per $1 is with an overseas merchant.

I think you may find (based on the date of your post) that there was a MR glitch at the time, which was basically awarding 2 pts per dollar for everything for a few days.

Great my water company (City West Water) seems to be the only company that does not accept paypal...

If they accept PostBillPay then you may be able to get around it that way. Then again they could block PayPal as a payment option as well...

No they accept postbillpay but do not allow paypal via postbillpay.

is there any surcharges or additional fees involved when paying with post bill pay?

Not in my experience. I'm regularly paying my electricity bill with Amex that way.

In Turkey my hotel has advised that they would charge 8% VAT on a cc. However, they do take paypal w' no vat.

If I use my Amex in Paypal, what sort of charges etc would I get versus say putting it on 28 Degrees via Paypal. Not that I've loaded 28 yet.

Finally loaded my Amex Plat Edge to my PayPal account. Noticed that if paying USD, PayPal usually converts to AUD, but for Amex it seems to leave it as USD?

Anyone done any comparison if this ends up with a better rate?

Also, for Platinum Edge, is it 1 point per dollar? (not the 0.5 for utilities, etc.).

With Paypal, always try and get charged in local currency, their conversion rates are really bad.

Always. Unless your card charges more than about 5%, DCC is a massive scam.

Woolworths mobile recharge has the paypal payment option. I've been paying using the paypal/amex combo for three months, however recently when I tried recharging last week, the paypal payment option would only accept Paypal/Visa combo.

Not sure if its a glitch, but this doesn't look good.

Not sure if it would be helpful for you, but since Woolworths Mobile is on the Optus Network, you can sign into the Optus website and setup your AMEX to automatically top-up your Woolworths Mobile account. It has been working for me for quite some time now.

hi shagnome. it works. thanks :)

funny how they accept amex if you set up an automatic direct debit.
