Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I have an AMEX card with Mrs W-K holding a supplementary card on my account. If Mrs W-K wants to get a card for herself to get a new card sign on bonus, will her having had a supplementary card count against her for the 18m rule?

No, it won’t

Definitely not.

Some use this rule to their advantage. Eg. Wait out the 18 months for their own card, but have a card for their partner at the same time so they can still take advantage of point earning opportunities/cash back promotions. Remember that you can have a supplementary card(s) from the primary card holders account.

i rang up for something else but asked that i've heard of people getting bonuses for being loyal customers and if there was something that was available to me... she said nothing was available :'(

Got an explorer+edge linked with a ~$40k/month average
I will try

Nothing for me either. Explorer fee is due- as I got a retention bonus last year (23k I think) nothing available this year. Probably over $60K spend annually.

I'm still working on getting the Explorer and Edge linked. They told me they could do it but could not transfer my Explorer points balance (about 160K). I wasn't too sure yet where to store my points but I probably will transfer them out to link the cards. Is this the case with others who had them linked?

ive read that if you have a high points balance, there is less chance of getting bonus points offer

Hi - I can't comment on linking cards, b/c I haven't attempted this, but you should be able to manually transfer points between Gateway and Ascent (takes up to 5 business days for transfer to occur)

I made another attempt for a retention bonus today... no dice :(

My points balance is sitting at ~200k at the moment which probably didn't help

Thanks for sharing your experience easypoints. I’ve drained most of my points this year in hope I could get a retention bonus. I’m at nearly 500k so am assuming I’ll either have too many or the low points balance theory is a non starter.

Genuinely tried to cancel Westpac Amex (QF) companion card after spending the minimum amount to obtain initial 20k bonus, was offered 5k to keep. Bought a plane ticket with the card then tried to cancel again, this time was offered 50k to keep. I didn’t ask for bonus pts when I rang to cancel.

Rang Amex after being charged annual fee for explorer. 500k warehoused points plus average spend around 3-4k/mth (ocassionally higher). Got offered 50k as loyal customer after asking for bonus points.

These were phone calls made 24 hours apart.

Just got 25k for the Explorer, 3-4k a month spend, offered the no fee card prior to the points. Happy enough, got nothing last year and no intention of dropping the card yet.

What did you say? I don’t want to cancel my cards but would like some bonuses if they’re on offer :)

I spend quite a bit but not been shown the love for a few years. Have minimal MR points now as had some big redemptions this year. Hoping my chances have improved.

I’ll report back how I go.

Thanks for all your feedback, looks like I might be in luck then considering I've got absolutely nothing last year.

you can actually go ahead with the cancellation and you have 30 days (or 90?) to reinstate it, same cards, same account etc.
So don't be afraid to actually cancel it.

Just as long as their policy doesn’t change like Westpac’s. I asked them to confirm the 3 month rule earlier this year and they said there was no such thing in case I tried to game the system with another application elsewhere. I’d have to re-apply and be assessed again for eligibility.

Amex have traditionally been good about this sort of stuff despite the oddball policy of making a fresh application where a product transfer might have sufficed.

Same here albyd. Rung them and no bonus points offered on explorer. Asked whether interested in Centurion - said no. I think I got 25K last year (around that I think) as retention and the agent said there is nothing in the system for him to offer anything.

How much do you spend each year roughly? Did you ask and offer you the Centurion straight away or asking for another product first?

Have moved significant spend on Explorer since Citi devalued its prestige. Say around half a mil. Was asked for Centurion straight away and said the invite was mailed out!!! - but I declined anyway.
Apparently the annual fee is due when they issue the card and not the date we made the application. So in effect the explorer's fee isn't due until Dec - and was therefore asked to ring back around then. He did say he was happy to put me on a fee free card - but I declined.
