Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

From what I can gather it is the case of "the computer says no, or the computer says xx_".. The person you speak with has no influence and if you are a NO, then you get nothing.

How the algorithm for YES is a mystery, but I am guessing that having a large points balance helps gains the NO.

Has anyone had large retention points offer who has had a large MR Points Balance?

I used to get offers many years back. But with always having had a large point balance for some time (ie. 0.5 to 3 million MR Points) I have had no joy. My wife with small balances had had some joy.

I used to think the same, except last year i got 40k for the velocity platinum card. that sweeps monthly to my velocity account.

I think you are right. It is just a mystery. I know the "person" has no real control, however last year the first 2 people said no and the 3rd person gave me 36k.. makes me wonder which call centre and what system they are all looking at

each time you make such an inquiry, that will become inputs for the next Yes or No, just a guess
 
Just called up to cancel my american express velocity platinum card, the reason being I want to change it to the Amex Platinum Charge card, which I said I would hold off now for the bonus points, and they instead offered me 70,000 points to keep the velocity platinum.

For my personal details, I first got my Velocity Platinum in 2015 so 3 years, and have already amassed 600,000 FF points (not including the 70k they just offered me).

Problem is, I don't just want the Charge Card for the points, I actually WANT the card as the travel benefits for me are perfect. So can I call up to cancel the card again in a month or two so I can meet up with the August 2020 card offers (August I have noticed is generally when AMEX boost their points on cards) without pissing them off too much?
 
i rang up for something else but asked that i've heard of people getting bonuses for being loyal customers and if there was something that was available to me... she said nothing was available :'(

Got an explorer+edge linked with a ~$40k/month average

You generally need to go through the charade of pretending to cancel, or need to ask to be put in touch with the retention team.

I’ve always just asked what retention incentives were available to me. The year they canned Accor Plus I went into more detail with them but that was a one-off
 
Just called, no retention offers on the system for my Exp/Edg. Was told to check back in a few months. Will do so right before renewal.
 
I just cancelled my Velocity Platinum - I had only signed up for the bonus points. They offered to move me to the no annual fee Escape version of the card, the 'no frills' card as they called it, but I said no as I'm trying to reduce my credit card limits in favour of hopefully buying a house in the near future. If I wasn't in that position I might have gone with the Escape card, but at least that's one less card I need to worry about now.
 
just offered 25K for Amex Velocity Platinum, fee due next week and I can use the free flight. I don't use the card a lot so Ill take the 25K

Were you at the end of the first year or have you had it longer. Given it appears everybody (or most) seem to have the only option provided to transfer to a lower card I wonder whether it was because we were all at the end of the first year (where we would have received the bonus sign up points in the past 12 months) compared to those who have held it longer and not recently received bonus points.

Was at the end of the 3rd year, was offered another card first said no, didn't sound like I was going to get anything but the operator said 25 k appeared on his screen
 
I've tried calling twice in the last two months to see what they can offer - AMEX Explorer

My card expires April '19

The first time I had 380,000 points and received a no
The second call I had 7,000 points and received a no :(

My wife has the same card, I'll get her to call and see if they offer anything for hers. You guys getting 30k+ points are lucky!

Did that this morning. Put through to retention. When asked why, I said no bonus points and not happy about SPG devalue. No offer, and now I have no more card lol oops.

Explorer linked with plat edge, 15k/mo spend, 280k point balance. Cancelled the explorer only, and edge due next month, will transfer points and cancel too i guess.

What card to get now?
 
If you’re putting 15k a month on your explorer I would call up and reinstate it again. Nothing better you can put that spend on.
 
rang to cancel amex velocity plat, offered 25k points to keep but for me not worth the annual fee.

anyway happy to run without an amex for a while then strike when the next big sign on hits.
