Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Was planning to love a chunk of points to SPG before the 55% deval next month, may help me in this endeavor.

Thought I’d mention it in case anyone else has a similar profile and not been getting retention offers despite high patronage.

Hi All,

I called yesterday to check on retention offer. No renteion offers were offered on my explorer, but got 40k on my velocity platinum. I use bugger all on both cards (probably 1k on explorer and 500 on veloctiy per month), not sure why I only got offered on lower spending card. Maybe due to the fact that I do not have a high closing balance on each billing cycle.
Amex rep just said its to do with your spending pattern etc, but no further detail was shared.
 
called up and cancelled.

no retention offer available (guy sounded overseas if that makes a difference). 1st year platinum charge. <$5k/month throughput.
 
practically nothing offered on mrs tizeys two cards (sub 5k)... this is despite having relatively small MR balances and pretty high spending, particularly over last 6months.

I felt like I was missing out having read this thread, then I cheered myself up by remembering the good old days when everyone was new to amex... everytime they applied.

I would be quite pleased if they offered me 40,000 points on my Qantas Platinum :)
 
Apologies if this is answered earlier in the thread. I genuinely want to cancel my platinum charge card, but got sucked in by a 100k offer "to stay for six months." Can they enforce that? My annual fee is due next month.

I would assume your bonus points would say "One-Off Loyalty Bonus" or something to that affect.
If you take the points and transfer them out, I wouldn't expect them to try and claw that back.
 
I called up as my anniversary date is the 23rd July. I have the Amex Velocity Platinum Card and spend about 4-5K a month.

I said I was a little concerned about the annual fee as other cards have a fee free option for the first year. I was offered 50,000 Velocity points to stay which I accepted.

Weeks after gifting 100k, they've just gifted another 70k :) on the same card (QF earner).

I'm transitioning from QF > MR earning with Amex. In between the first and second gifting I've applied and been issued a few other Amex cards ;):) (yes, there is a very good reason for the emojis:)) When I called to transfer my limit and cancel the QF earner they offered another 70K to stay. The agent could see the date of the first 100k and was surprised he was requested to make the offer of another 70K.

I accepted the offer and got them to transfer 95% of my limit leaving a few Ks on the QF card. I'll cancel this one in a few months.

Pretty happy with my new set up - big shout of thanks to the AFF member that walked me through it. From a standing start I've generated a substantial MR balance and have things in order to really super size this number through RewardPay/Explorer/Ascent P, etc .... we're very much looking forward to adding our names to the SQ Suites flyers list.

I gave Amex a call today regarding my Platinum Edge Card - no points offered to retain :(
was only offered a downgrade to a different card

Ill try my luck again soon (currently in my 11th month)
 
For the last 3 years, I have received 35k - 40k points x 2 cards. Each year it was offered to me when I called.

This year nothing.

Spoken to a couple of different reps and they all have the same story.. I am not sure I can get it across the line this year :(
