Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Those who have called recently and mentioned the net a porter credit being removed, have they indicated a replacement is coming?

I tried calling twice - said no both times. Let me know how you get on….
Renewal is in Feb. Av spend around $12.5k/month. Rang today and they wouldn't put me through to retentions unless I'm going to cancel. Last year this was not the case. Last year they put me through without me saying I want to cancel and gave me some renewal points. It was an offshore operator I got today. She said the retention offers won't show up until you request to cancel. I just want to get the process right as I don't want to lose the MR in my account. The operator said you have 30 days to transfer out to airline/hotel partners etc. I was wanting to hold out until there is another marriott 50% transfer bonus. Does anyone know when that is this year??

Does anyone know, if you get put through to the cancellation team you then have options to stay.
I'm finding less and less value in the card, the fx rates are horrible, the travel service to use the credit is terrible (have to ring in to make changes to bookings), the transfer rates for NZ card holders are the worst in the world eg QR is 3:1 rate, the travel insurance is very restrictive. Have to put ALL airfares on amex card to get cover etc etc...

I've got a relation in the US who could apply for an amex card and get me a supplementary card. Does anyone know that once that happens I could transfer my NZ MR to the US card? Just trying to figure out what to do here...

Does anyone have any experience also with Priority Pass card when you cancel the Platinum charge card? Does that mean that when you go to a PP lounge and swipe it they can pick up that your amex plat is cancelled, even though it's still got a valid expiry date on your PP card?

Can someone actually confirm that they’ve cancelled their charge card over the phone then been able to transfer the MR to Marriott within the 30 days after the card cancellation. Just want to tie up all loose ends before I pull the pin.

Yes. Just say you are thinking to cancel and wish to speak to the cancellations team.

I got the same spiel, told them to transfer me, then went through my grievances with the cancellations team. I explained that the previous operator couldn't discuss potential compensation for the devaluation, but was told only the cancellations team could, hence why I requested to be transferred.

Thanks I was told that I had to initiate the cancellation first before they would put me through to that team. The operator said the retention offer would only appear after the cancellation had been actioned.

Not the Platinum, but my Priority Pass on my Citi card was cancelled about a week after cancelling the card the PP was attached as a benefit to, despite the PP renewal date being July 2024. I would imagine the same would happen with Amex.

Called to cancel my Amex Plat Edge and was offered no retention offer. When I mentioned it they said they aren’t allowed to offer them anymore. I wanted to cancel anyway so not too disappointed about it.

Thanks for that. I'm thinking about just going with the basic PP membership where you pay $99 a year and $35USD a visit. I was trying to think how many times I'd used it over the last few years and couldn't think of too many times, as either the lounges had queues or were too far away from my boarding gate or I was travelling J anyway so had lounge access.

Probably a bit OT for the Amex forum but the Citi Premier offers that low tier PP (2 free visits and US$35 for subsequent visits) and that card is currently being offered with 200k Citi points for a first year AF of $150. Could be worth a look in your situation.

I jumped on the online chat and said I wanted to cancel my explorer back in September. I think they asked why and I said I don’t use it and I might have mentioned looking for other signup bonuses. Was very quickly offered 120k Amex points, received in a few days, transferred to Avios for 60k and then cancelled this week before renewal using the site cancellation link without interacting with anyone. Had the card for a bunch of years.

I jumped on chat, and they said I have to cancel card on the phone.

Have you given up after only one chat?
Haha no not yet, they just said I have to call… I called yesterday but they quoted something that they can’t afford retention bonus points, maybe I didn’t get through to proper cancellation team. Will try again tomorrow I guess lol

FWIW another datapoint, I called up to cancel my platinum charge today with AF due in Feb. I cited the EK/SQ devaluations, as well as a bad experience I had with their travel insurance medical assistance. I've only been a customer for 12 months, and don't spend a huge amount, so wasn't expecting a terribly high offer.

I was offered 30k points to stay, the agent was quick to offer it and I only mentioned the experience with the travel insurance benefit after that, but apparently it is an automated offer that they can't influence.

Kept the card anyway as I got slightly more than the AF in value last year excluding points, so the 30k points is (barely) enough to push it into the black for me. I do wonder if the offer would have changed had I called back in 2 weeks, but I guess I'll never know!

Amex Explorer cardholder
Last week attempted twice to see if could get retention points due to krisflyer deval, less favourable cashback offers, worse shop-small etc, and was not offered anything (besides changing to another card).

First rep said that they dont offer retention bonuses anymore, and that system doesn't spit out bonus points upon closing account anymore either.
Second call, I was much less upfront of my intentions, noted issues etc, and requested to close account since seemed unable to further help. No points were offered by the system, so kindly asked to reinstate card before ending call (as still want to keep it).

Spoke once to overseas and once australian call centre.

Disappointed, though seems that any retention/good will/loyalty offers are going to be rare going forward :(

One week to renewal, called twice: a few days ago and recently.

First time offshore, asked to transfer to cancellations team. She said she could cancel straight away, very direct, no attempt at retaining or explaining benefits. No retention offer either. Asked if I could reinstate if I changed mind later (within 30 days, as I've read in this thread). She said no, will need to do new application. Got cold feet and decided to HUCA.

Second attempt got onshore. Complained about erosion of benefits before moving towards requesting xfer to cancellations/retentions. Transferred to offshore. Again, no retention but decided to go through it this time to see if I'd get the reinstate offer. No reinstate offer.

Amex plat, $220k YTD spend, one year customer

cough :(
