I have booked using a "dummy" passport number with no problems with LAN.

You just need to take an extra couple of minutes at check in but all easy!!

Have a good trip. We are in the AKL QF Bus lounge now!!

Now to work out the car. Pickup in Wellington City Centre on 19th, drop off to AKL International 27th.

Any companies out there to be made aware of, or just look at the usual Hertz/Avis/Thrifty?

Thanks Bossreggie. I will be reunited with my passport when I get home on Wednesday. I'm kinda being a nerd and waiting till then to book but super glad to hear a success story with a dummy passport number.

Cant wait for the TR!!

I used Hertz in 2006 but that was purely as they were cheapest.

The one-way fees can be a killer (lots of people start in AKL and drop off in WEL for the boat), but WEL-AKL might actually be ok, you may even get a good rate for the one-way (the other way).

As above many rentals go north to south. Have seen Avis in central Wellington offer discount relocates

Have a look at Rental Car NZ Hire at StandByCars and Rental Relocations NZ (but they want cars returned direct)

There are 2nd tier rental companies below Avis Hertz Budget, who rent out cars about 5 years old (used cars imported from Japan). I have rented from http://www.a2brentals.co.nz/ when working in NZ for a few months some years ago.

When doing some planning for NZ last year I found rankers.co.nz to be a pretty handy resource

Should be entertaining, especially when we spend a night at Napier Prison. Hopefully Flashware's arm has recovered from when I gave him a mega bruise during the ghost tour in Fremantle......

Although it might be amusing, I hope to read a lot about the two of you enjoying the NZ North Island, not about how much you can get Flashware to milk out of his private health and/or travel insurance.

I tend to stick with the majors. I tried some comparison dummy bookings from www.vroomvroomvroom.com for:

WLG - WLG and...
WLG - AKL

...and there was no price difference (at least at the cheaper end of the range that I noted). They stated that any 'one way fees' were included.

Note that Thrifty (which seems cheapest in most car size categories) is excluded in any search from Wellington City, as they only have offices at the airport and the ferry.

Check against the company website though, who knows, it may sometimes be cheaper (and if you use vroom remember to state AKL Int, as it seems to default to AKL Dom).

There has been the odd grumble here about Thrifty but I used them last time in NZ (via vroom) and had no issues (and am using them again at Easter). Just be sure to employ the normal vigilance as far as prior damage goes.

I wouldn't touch Europcar with a bargepole after what I've read on AFF.

Anyway, there's a bit of choice there, and there are probably reliable 'local' operators as well.

Hertz two days free in NZ , promo code 135656, using QFF CDP $344 for a group A, sign up for 5 star for free before you book and you might get an upgrade.

Is there a number I can punch in for the QF CDP? Or do I just trigger the booking via the QF website?

Qantas 2 Free Days on NZ rentals:
Customer Discount Program (CDP) number 297302 and Promotional Coupon (PC) number 135656 must be quoted during reservation to redeem the free days offer.

Qantas 2 Free Days on NZ rentals:

Might need to book via the QF website.

The Promotion Coupon - 135656 and Rate Code - CR combination you've selected is not available for this rental either because that location isn't participating or some requirement for the offer hasn't been met. We have removed the Promotion Coupon and Rate Code from your request to provide you with the best rate. There may be other offers in the Special offer section which do apply, so you could check there for an alternative. [DRX143]

Ah, I see the problem.

Offer is available at all Hertz locations in New Zealand for rentals commencing
1 March - 25 March 2010. Rentals must be completed by 31 March 2010.

Will book the current rate then, and watch out for specials later on.

I'm going to live vicariously through your travels, Flashware and karens.

straitman sent me photo's of the Hilton Lake Taupo by MMS and I have put it down as a "must" place to stay when we return to NZ next.

Excellent, that's good to hear! Looking forward to it. Lake Taupo is our 'relaxation' part of the trip.

You mean you haven't seen (or shown karens) the Hilton Lake Taupo photo's (actually, some of these don't do it true justice - you need to see straitman's photo's - you can do that next Monday night).

That should whet your respective appetites .

I've rented from all the majors (Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty) in NZ, and don't mind Europcar NZ at all. Won't touch them in Tasmania though.

The 2nd tier rental companies are ok, but I'd generally pay extra for a major. Used Pegasus in the past.

As I mentioned before, check grabacar on Tuesdays (grabaseat: our best deals - Air NZ). And of course, standbyrelocs.com and transfercar.co.nz are both good for oneway relocs. Of course, some of the companies list their oneway rentals on their own sites, and they might be cheaper directly.
