Airport security confiscated an empty water bottle

They still need additional information which isn't on your passport and you haven't entered anywhereesle, why are you here, how long will you stay, do you have a visa, etc etc.?
That is all taken care of. You answer all those questions when you do your arrival card online. They collect all data needed like hotel etc. even have a pre populated list of all hotels so it comes up as you start typing…

I was doing a day transit as well one time and that was there as an option. Singapore have thought this through well.

Yes but then the customs/quarantine people at AU airports will then need screens to bring up each person's declaration. currently it's just show the card
Again just link to passport. They have those readers already to scan passports at the baggage carousel in Australia when they are fast tracking. All linked to passport makes it easy. We could copy their system easily and adapt for our needs.

Yet you can take whatever liquids you want on domestic flights... If there is risk why have different policies?
Because the people who come up with these rules, and most of those who enforce them, are brainless idiots. Right up to the current PM who rolled out these rules in the first place.

In NAN, on the way home to CBR, Fiji Air staff did a pre-flight bag check after we scanned our boarding passes and just before boarding. They took my full 250 ml standard airline water bottle that I filled in the lounge! We did have a chuckle to ourselves.
Now I do wonder if the same bottle would have been located and required to be surrendered if it was in your pocket at the time ??? What is in your pocket is unlikely to be located during a carry-on bag search. Obviously a bottle of water on your person (in your pocket) is not a security risk, while the same bottle in your carry-on bag is a problem.
