Airport security confiscated an empty water bottle

They still need additional information which isn't on your passport and you haven't entered anywhereesle, why are you here, how long will you stay, do you have a visa, etc etc.?
That is all taken care of. You answer all those questions when you do your arrival card online. They collect all data needed like hotel etc. even have a pre populated list of all hotels so it comes up as you start typing…

I was doing a day transit as well one time and that was there as an option. Singapore have thought this through well.

Yes but then the customs/quarantine people at AU airports will then need screens to bring up each person's declaration. currently it's just show the card
Again just link to passport. They have those readers already to scan passports at the baggage carousel in Australia when they are fast tracking. All linked to passport makes it easy. We could copy their system easily and adapt for our needs.

Yet you can take whatever liquids you want on domestic flights... If there is risk why have different policies?
Because the people who come up with these rules, and most of those who enforce them, are brainless idiots. Right up to the current PM who rolled out these rules in the first place.

In NAN, on the way home to CBR, Fiji Air staff did a pre-flight bag check after we scanned our boarding passes and just before boarding. They took my full 250 ml standard airline water bottle that I filled in the lounge! We did have a chuckle to ourselves.
Now I do wonder if the same bottle would have been located and required to be surrendered if it was in your pocket at the time ??? What is in your pocket is unlikely to be located during a carry-on bag search. Obviously a bottle of water on your person (in your pocket) is not a security risk, while the same bottle in your carry-on bag is a problem.

Don't I know that! That's what I do when I return to New Zealand. And yes, they scan the passport and look at a screen!

They already do---in Brisbane INT.
When you enter Australia and use the e passport screens, you’re asked several questions relating to where you’ve been and then you’re issued a ticket that you then need to scan before clearing immigration so the scanning system is already in place. Most countries ask you to complete a customs declaration online and that declaration is linked to your passport number so that when you scan your passport on entry you’ve already given the information that the Australian paper dec cards ask for. You then proceed to the customs area and scan the code you’ve been issued for customs, which you can either print or have on your phone. It’s not that complicated.

Been there, done that several times! I look forward to entering via BNE as it makes things so simple. However, one time I amended my electronic declaration to avoid secondary screening but they ignored my change. so I was sent, briefly, to secondary screening, and just passed through. (It was contact with rural areas in last 30 days. Since I was tramping in the alps I said yes but then I recalculated and it was 32 days). If I had filled in a paper declaration this wouldn't have happened. It shows that you can't really change an electronic declaration once you have completed it.

Compared to:

"You then proceed to the customs area and just give the officer a declaration card"

Yeah nah. I'm not convinced....
You can do the arrival declaration before you get on the plane and at home, unless you keep a stash of arrival cards at home, and carry the completed card around with you, which I do for most cities except BNE!

But you don't need to scan anything but your passport if the right system is implemented. That's the point. Let's look to Singapore. Everything is done in advance and all answers virtually attached to your passport number. You just scan your passport on entry - nothing else is needed. They don't even have people at the initial border anymore - all done through scanning. Human only gets involved if required to check anything. It is so quick and easy. No forms, no pens, no paper.

A paper arrival card is no more complicated and also done in advance. Importantly it is more contemporaneous if done in flight before landing. No need for apps or websites or access to the internet. Just pen paper. All cabin crew carry pens if you don't have one.

I'd prefer electronic arrivals cards and paper boarding passes.
You could be right! I remember in the early days of electronic BPs being in a queue where a Pax was trying to find his El BP. He stood aside while about 5 Paxs with paper BPs, including me, went through.
