I have several AirBnB bookings for the UK in June and July which I will obviously need to cancel. The current AirBnB "extenuating circumstances" policy is only up to 31 May which is outside the window of my bookings so I have been watching to see if / when that policy will be extended before I cancel.

On 28 April when I logged into my AirBnB account, every booking for the period had a notification posted next to it, to the effect that 'this booking may be affected by an extension to our COVID-19 cancellation policy' and that this 'would be advised on 1 May'. I took this as a hopeful sign that an announcement on extension of the policy would be made in the next few days.

On 29 April when I logged into my account again, that notification has been removed.

Did anyone else see this notification, and if so do you still have it? Or maybe someone at AirBnB hit the 'post' button too early by mistake and it's now been removed?

I contacted our host in Cape Town a couple of days ago. Our booking is mid-July. They advised that if I cancel now we would not be covered by the policy and would lose any nights not rebooked by someone else. They also advised that it would be best to wait and see if the policy was extended beyond May 31 and that's what we'll do.

Yes, many of us are waiting. I just think it’s odd that they posted information about an extension and then removed that information quite quickly.

we have a booking in Paris for 1st-16th July.

Host is saying 50% deposit that I've paid will be forfeited, so lets see what the policy gets extended to.

airbnb has extended their excruciating policy now to cover bookings till 30th June.

surely next update will cover me for 1st july lol

Just applied for a full cash refund for a mid-June booking that is now covered. Thanks for the alert @daft009 !

The process is a bit sneaky - you'll see two main options when you cancel, but for a full cash refund, you'll need to click the link at the bottom.

Process requires official government documentation to show a travel ban is in place. I attached a PDF from Smart Traveller and Home Affairs. Will see how we go.

so you cancel via extenuating circumstances first get the no refund available and then apply for extenuating circumstances Separatel?

***nope cancel via covid 19 first not extenuating circumstances

**the two before it worked 21/6 to 23/6 and 23/6 to 27/6 - this next one is double the money

That’s because the host has a flexible cancellation policy. If they had a strict policy you would get all back. Happened to me on 3 of my 9bbookings

thank you
do you know if you can use the vouchers in the one booking? Can it be used for hosts cost or just the service fees?

looks to be that they can’t be combined - so multiple bookings and need to be checked in my 30/12/20

As far as I understand, it’s simply a credit in your account that goes towards whatever you spend with AirBnB. One of mine came back like that.

@runway16R what PDF did you use please? I'll get that ready while I wait for the next update :)

Airbnb approved my cancellation request and is providing a full cash refund - finally!

For government docs, I just provided a print PDF of the following pages:
+ the Smart Traveller profile for the specific country I was visiting

These documents were accepted by Airbnb for the cash refund.

Refund approved based on Covid 19, Smartraveller and home affairs page provided - less than 24hrs and approved.

Yes, same here. I had several bookings to cancel; some in the first cancellation period and some in the second. I have 3 bookings remaining in July that I need to cancel; I’m waiting to see if the policy extends past 30 June.
