Air Crash Investigation

There are sometimes technical inaccuracies that get on our nerves, but they are pretty good shows overall.

LOL @ watching it on board and horrifying the passenger next to you. Mean but funny!

I love this show too. Happy to watch re-runs as well.

The Pommie series "Black Box" made form 1999 to 2002 was more concise and informative, with none of the re-enactment type rubbish which I think lessons the gravitas of the loss of life.

I think there are six shows.

Recommend it over Air Crash Investiagtion which seems to be suitable for people with attention spans of 15 seconds.

Two things:

b. my fave episode was the one where he landed a jet with NO fuel on a runway the pilots thought was clear, but was being used for drag racing on that exact day!

The Gimli glider served a further 25 years after that incident and retired last year to Mojave, the pilots involved in the incident were on the final flight of the 767-200 to Mojave, the captain had in fact retired in 93.

I also watch the show; when I remember to watch the pay TV channels, its on separate remote so sometimes I never get around to looking at the other channels.

I think there are a couple of different series of Air Crash Investigators; some are better than others.

I am fanatic as well, particularly Friday nights on Foxtel when there are multiple shows on back-to-back (oooh, look, that's tonight :0). I'm only sad when it's one that I've seen multiple times and I don't feel like watching it again (because I know what's going to happen, the outcome from the investigation etc). I have to find something else to watch for an hour before I check out the next episode.

The Gimli Glider is a good one, as well as the one that glided into the military runway on the island in the middle of the ocean (Airsat??? or something similar, couldn't be bothered looking it up now).

My wife thinks I'm a little strange to watch it, but call it my human curiosity that piques my interest. When watching the Hudson River crash program the other night on Ch 7 (with my wife, her curiosity made her watch it), I was telling her about the correct angle of descent that the pilot would need to pitch the plane - yes, she was looking at me really strangely that I would know that kind of stuff... call me a freak, dear ;)

Like others, I find it very informative (now know what a pito (sp?) tube is and a lot more about the internal workings or an aeroplane an hoe they interrelate).

Yeah I watch it too. It doesn't really bother me when I watch it as I know that the actual odds of being involved in an air accident is so slim that it doesn't even cross my mind that it "could be me" when watching.

That said I don't generally watch air crashes whilst on planes, as the one and only time I saw an air crash on a film it was the same time that the pax next to me looked over onto my lappy and then went white... You could just about see the fingernail marks he left in the seat...

My thoughts exactly!!! More chance of having an accident crossing the road or driving (even in Brisbane!)

Haven't tried that like others here, but when I do get around to downloading them, I'd probably be mindful of others opinions and watch in my hotel room at night, if there wasn't anything better on the box, or work to be done.

That's the one, serfty! Close on the spelling, but no banana.

Thanks v8Stateman for the link - my poor memory again. Another similar is the BA9 incident also on ACI.

There are some really well spoken NTSB investigators on the program - Greg Feith (now retired) is my favourite

Yes the odds might be slim, much like the odds of winning lotto. but if it does happen to me, I want to be an edge ahead of everyone else. ;)

Besides what really strikes me about the show are the cases that could have been near misses instead of crashs. There was one where one engine caught on fire and the pilot mixed up which one was on fire and shut down the good engine. But the pax could see the fire and assume the pilot would get it right. Moral: If one sees something on the aircraft - tell the crew no matter what.

I noticed that in NZ this show is called 'Mayday'.

According to Wiki, it is also known as Air Emergency in the US, Air Crash Investigation in the UK and Australia, and Mayday in Spain:mrgreen:

I like the one that happened just after 9/11 when the plane crashed into the houses - I think I get into the episodes that area really graphic with the crash re-enactment for some reason.

On Friday repeat night I still tape them but just watch the intros until they crash. Not trying to sound ominus - just like it.

I'm not allowed to talk about the show to hubby - it freaks him out to much. On a GOOD note from the little we have discussed, it's meant he insists we fly BA in Europe and not the cheap airlines so it's got it's advantages!

Another good look at Air Crash Investigations (in layman and laywomen language) is the series Air Disaster volumes 1 thru 4, written by Macarthur Job, and distributed by Australian Aviation. Covers all the major incidents world wide, and makes for great reading during flights:D

Cheers Dee

I'm a huge fan of it too!

I think of them as educational. Think about it - if I'm on a plane and xx_X starts happening, I'll immediately think through everything I've learned from the series. If I remember there was one crash where if the passengers had alerted the crew then nobody would have died...
