I don't seem to have any trouble

Off to Malaysia OOL - KUL for 3 weeks

A$99 up and 257MYR back
that's A$174/345MYR including all the 'frills' - luggage, meals, sybus.

Thought that was good but just happened to look this a.m and ended up going again in March for

A$58 up and 142MYR back
that's A138/235MYR incl. frills.- They've now added a $5 convenience fee which bumps the price up!

The return trip from KUL works out at A$46 + A$30 extras and is nearly half the fare of the OOL sector.

In most cases I find that it's cheaper to book two singles as opposed as a return ex Australia.

I guess you have to be lucky (and flexible)i

So glad QF did not merge with BA, who's position will be less well off if AAsia or other decides base in say Germany, and offer a free or discounted flight to UK. Silly tax = arbitrage = death of higher cost carriers.

Oh, AirAsia have another sale on, and I looked and places seem 'thin/scarce' - have not found a sale fare worth trumpeting about.

When did you book?

I've been looking at fares about 1-2 months out but this seems a no go with AA...I guess you need a 3-4 month lead time to get these super-cheap fares...damn it's hard for me to organise this much in advance.

Why the ***** is this the case??? Makes no sense...thanks for the tip.

Also using the airasiaplus.com website is gold...the ability to see 15 days of fares on 1 page is great.

Different markets.

e.g. Qantas cheapest MEL-AKL-MEL fares return ex OZ are ~AUD425 all up.

AKL-MEL-AKL, they are NZD447 (~AUD366)

You can do a hybrid with two one-way fares of MEL-AKL at AUD235 and AKL-MEL for NZD199 (~AUD163): ~AUD398 all up.

I was more or less thinking of 'exchange rate' differences.

I used always book BNE-CHC, then CHC-BNE. Had to add in the NZ departure tax but it still worked out cheaper by $20/$30.
Allowed 'open jawed' itineraris as well

Good hunting.

after having an absolutely perfect trip to Malaysia on AirAsia (as compared to the disaster on Air France just before it, and British Airways a month ago) I'm happy to pass along an e-mail I got today...

Air Asia is having another free fare sale... US$47 PER-KUL, US$63 MEL/OOL-KUL and a bunch of 6 and 9 RM flights around Malaysia...

New planes, decent service and low loads... what more could you ask for?

--Russ

PS. Sale starts November 11th to 15th for flights 1 May to October 2010

Managed to get myself some flights this morning in the sale - well 9 seats from CGK-MES return, so can't complain about that, less than $40 all up.

On the down side, to coincide with the sale it appears that AirAsia has implemented a 'convienence fee' for pretty much every method of payment - worked out about $2 per passenger per sector. I guess that just puts them into line with pretty much every other carrier out there these days *sigh*.

Just booked AUH-KUL-MEL for next August, total all-in fare approx AUD 111. Not bad for approx 7,500 miles of flying (that's equivalent to SYD-LAX).

Check the price on QF!!!!

And in my own humble experience, D7 aren't that bad, but some people will always want to pay through the nose.

That shows MYR99 and MYR199 (~AUD95 )

Then you need to start adding in the extras ...

I've got it booked the other way around one way MEL - KUL - AUH. That Abu Dhabi flight is silly cheap; MYR99 = $30! Looking to spend a month or two to the mid east and Eastern Europe before heading to Canada (may be an interesting mix of one way flights to get to Canada...)

Some of the intra Indonesian flights come up as being a few thousand Rupiah; less than A$1 + convenience fee. I'd imagine with prices like that, revenue integrity is going to be hard to manage with a heck of alot of no shows or overbookings.
