I'm still here, but have been quite busy with work and travel recently ... and by recently I mean the whole year - so much so that I've finally cracked QF Gold in the last week.

I did keep tabs on the thread trying to categorise all the songs that were listed originally, so I'll add the new ones that have been posted this month and hopefully come up with something in the wee hours of the morning whilst watching the World Cup. I certainly don't like having unfinished projects so rest assured it will get done ... timing is the key! :p

Cheesy

How are your lists going? I have to go through my songs and add a few (and i see some of my choices are there already)

just a few tunes to past the time away

acdc you shook me all night long
credence Bad moon on the rise
Beatles Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Bob Dylan Blowing in the wind
Ice house Great Southern Land
Rod Steward I am sailing
The Choirboys Run to paradise
The Animals We gotta get out of this place
Pink Floyd Dark side of the moon
Lou Reed Take a walk on the wild side
The Doors Riders of the storm

and wait for it
Cold Chisel khe Sahn
red gum I've been to Bali too
And i swear they are all on my ipod

They might be on your PMP, but how many of the MP3s you list are actually about air travel? None, I would suspect.

Cold Chisel khe Sahn

I can vouch for Khe Sahn. Some lyrics:

Held a job on an oil rig
Flying choppers when I could
You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Only seven flying hours, and I'll be landing in Hong Kong
Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Yeah the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And it's really got me worried
I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry
And the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone

just a few tunes to past the time away
Cold Chisel khe Sahn
red gum I've been to Bali too

I can vouch for Khe Sahn. Some lyrics:

Good call, Synthetic. :)
Looking at the stuff in the start of what Bali Belly had posted, I'd missed Khe Sahn as well as the Redgum track.

Cheesy, how much longer do you think it'll take you to get the compiled playlist done?

Ok, here's the update ...

I compiled the recommendations that were made before the topic took a hiatus, and have created a few categories as some of the songs are very much linked to "frequent flying", some more general travel related, and others have very tenuous links indeed!

Come Sunday (because I finally have one off!) I should be able to post a full list in the reserved post on page 1, and if there is any debate/queries regarding individual songs then we can do it then.

Will look forward to it (.... but do try to find some time to relax on your one day off!) (-:

Sunday in how many months time to get the list compiled and posted, Cheesy?
Also I have another song for addition to the list, as it mentions air travel, though the song itself is not about air travel:
Skyhooks - Women In Uniform

lyrics from the first half of the second verse:

Flying to my hometown on a 747
Stewardess made me feel like I'm in heaven
Looking up the aisle trying to see what I could see
She leaned over and said coffee tea or me

Unfortunately I have a feeling that this weekend may be a busy one for Cheesy:mrgreen:

5 Sundays later and where's the compiled list?

Learning to Fly - Tom Petty& the Heartbreakers
Back in the USSR - Beatles
Hawaii - Beach Boys

I had a look at the lyrics for the songs you found.
As far as I can tell from Googling the lyrics, only the Beatles track has any relevance to air travel.

I think you're missing the point here. Why are you being so critical of everyone? :-|

I am not sure this was supposed to be so literal from reading the OP. Rather that refers to general travel related songs.

I would consider the following suggestion as travel related
learning to fly,
I am sailing
Blowing in the wind
Lucy in the sky
And some of the other recent suggestions.

Oh yeah
Run to paradise
Dark side of the moon (pretty limit number of people have travelled there)
On that line what about A space oddity, has someone suggested that.
Riders on the storm
We gotta get out of this place, which explores a similar theme as 1000 miles away.

Because of post 23 in this thread, Flashware.

Exactly, which is why I think we might need to define the word "classic" a bit more. When you broaden the horizons and start talking travel loosely you could have an infinite list, so maybe it's best to just stick to "flying" songs. I'll go through the additions at some stage and update my secondary post with all the flying songs, unless there is public outcry at a haphazard change of policy! (Queue Yes, Minister quote - "Policy on the run, is policy underdone")

The way I was reading Cheesy's post was that the criteria had been changed to be songs about air travel and not merely referring to flying much less travel in general.

I would agree. Seems every song suggested lately has received a hash post, though I do agree that I have no idea about that band.

Either way, there's no need to personally vet every song. I'm sure if it ever happened it would come down to votes anyway.

And post 23 isn't a law. You don't need to examine each song from there ;)

Fair enough then. But for my money that would rule out Khe Sahn for a start. While it does mention flying IMO the song is not about flying.

I'm also not sure that Back in the USSR is about flying.

But I would say that the following recent suggestions are about flying

Learning to Fly - Tom Petty& the Heartbreakers

While the following recent suggestions could involving people who are "flying"

Beatles Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Bob Dylan Blowing in the wind
Pink Floyd Dark side of the moon
The Doors Riders of the storm

Then of course, post#23 and the flying limitation would rule out 2 out of the 3 suggestions in the OP.

Or am I being to serious about all this..... ;)
