I was browsing through my iTunes playlist the other day and stumbled across a favourite of mine, Hoodoo Gurus - A Thousand Miles Away. For anyone who knows the lyrics to this song (click here if you don't), it is a classic Frequent Flyer story if I've ever heard one.

Where am I going with this? Well my thought was that what other songs are there that could be deemed as "Frequent Flyer Classics". Doesn't necessarily have to specifically flying related, could be general travel (One Night in Bangkok comes to mind). If we come up with a decent enough compilation, then I'll see if I can set up an AFF Playlist in the iTunes Store - pending appropriate endorsement from admin of course!

So I'll kick it off with just a few so as not to steal everyone's thunder ...

  • Hoodoo Gurus - A Thousand Miles Away
  • Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok
  • Frank Sinatra - Come Fly With Me
Feel free to debate the worthiness of each suggestion that comes through, and for every one that receives enough approval I'll add to the above list. Of course if this is just a waste of time, let me know!

Excellent idea.

Christine Anu - My Island Home
Don Henley - New York Minute
John Denver? - Leaving on a Jet Plane

A couple of quick suggestions from me:

After the fall: Destination unknown
Everything but the girl: Walking wounded

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Cheesy shouldn't you be working?

I don't know that these are related to flying (apart from the Foo Fighters video clip), however these are related to traveling in some form or shape.

-Werewolves of London, Warren Zevon
-Hollywood Nights, Bob Seger
-Learn to Fly, Foo Fighters (Video Clip)
-Miami, Will Smith

-Down Under, Men at Work

Will add more when I think of them.

Actually, Sinatra's album, "Come Fly With Me" is a compendium of travel songs itself (maybe one of the first "concept albums").

Tracks include

Around the World
Isle of Capri
Moonlight in Vermont
Autumn in New York
On The Road To Mandalay*
Let's Get Away From It All
April In Paris
London By Night
Brazil
Blue Hawaii
It's Nice to Go Trav'ling**
Chicago
South of the Border
I Love Paris***

* Probably not a reference to the Vegas casino, as it wasn't there when the song was recorded
** Especially on an upgrade
*** Who doesn't?

On the road to Mandalay was inspired by a famous poem by Rudyard Kipling and contains the first second and last verse. Apparently Kiplings family did not approve!

On the road again Willie Nelson

Surely that is the theme song we all live by? And some others:

Six days on the road Charlie Pride

Kentucky Rain Elvis Presley

New York State of Mind Billy Joel

More to follow.

This is going to take me a little while to search through my library, as I have nearly 21k songs. I’ll take a look though and see what I’ve got.

When I’m on a plane though, I don’t normally listen to flying songs ;)

Everything but the girl: Walking wounded

<3

John Denver? - Leaving on a Jet Plane

How about Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver too.

Other than those listed:

John Williamson - We are Australian
Hunters and Collectors - Holy Grail
ACDC - Highway to Hell
Billy Joel - We Didn’t Start the Fire
Elton John - Rocket Man
Icehouse - Great Southern Land
Chet Baker - Travellin’ Light

I’m getting confused by what is and what isn’t travelling now, so I’m gonna stop searching and just hit shuffle.

*cough* How about Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells, the full version *cough* ;)

Stay (Just a little bit longer) Jackson Browne, at the end of a training tour this one resonates with me.
Flying for me John Denver
Absolutely everybody Vanessa Amorosi (need you ask?)
What a wonderful world Louis Armstrong and we get to see more of it than other people.

Day Tripper Beatles, yeah we’ve all done a few of these.
Ticket to ride again the Beatles and something we all covet. And the final Beatles song for now, Hello Goodbye. Isn’t this how Frequent Flyers live their lives?

I guess anything by Joan Jett has to be mentioned? And keeping in the theme of this list, I love rock and roll.

If you get the Orange Juice FA on AA then Elton John’s “The cough is back” might be appropriate. Another Elton John song to consider is Passengers.

Sydney from a 727 by Paul Kelly is a song I enjoy.

The Theme from Local hero, Going Home is always nice to hear.

“Most people I know (think that I’m crazy)” by Billy Thorpe would go a long way to describe what some others think of us.

Would I be straying too far from topic by saying I'd love to have April in Paris

Nothing like a good double entendre.

Have you seen him live, absolutely brilliant!

If you’re going to choose Stay, it needs The Load Out before it and Running on Empty isn’t a bad song too, all from the same album, and pretty much about travelling.

Great idea Cheesy. I just want to add a +1 to Hvr's nomination of "Sydney from a 727". When I've been away from Sydney, particularly if it has been for a few days and I'm landing at night, this song just seems to go around in my head:

"Have you ever seen Sydney from a 727 at night?
Sydney shines such a beautiful light
And I can see Bondi through my window way off to the right..."

Jet Airliner...Steve Miller Band
LA International Airport...Susan Rae (!)
Ramblin' Man...Allman Brothers
Rockin' Down The Highway...Doobie Brothers
From St Kilda to Kings Cross...Paul Kelly

There must be squillions. :)
