In the AFF Exclusive Offers section there is the following offer of a smartphone rental in the USA.

Explora is a smartphone rental service for travellers visiting the United States.

We use the latest generation smartphones (Google Nexus 5), and include unlimited nationwide calling, text messaging and 4G LTE data. Each Explora smartphone includes special travel offers and benefits from more than 40 pre-loaded apps that make-up Explora's "Ultimate Travel Companion" service.

International calling and text messaging is available via the pre-loaded apps. You are also free to download any other apps you wish from the Google Playstore.

Deliver and returns are simple. We ship directly to your arrival hotel or other address so Explora is waiting for you when you arrive. Returns are handled via pre-paid FedEx envelopes.

Typically US$8.00 per day, AFF members will receive a 20% discount (US$6.40 per day).

For further information and FAQs please visit the website at www.exploraphones.com or reserve with the coupon code "WELOVEAFF" via THIS LINK.
I recently used this service and actually found it quite good. The rate is $US8 minus 20% for AFF members so $6.40 per day. for that they supplied a Nexus smartphone with data and calls included. The phone was mailed out to our first point of arrival and at the end we simply put it in the prepaid FedEx bag and sent it back.

The only issue was that at one point it stopped working as it needed a recharge but that was sorted within a couple of hours.

The hardest part of the exercise was getting used to the Nexus rather than a iPhone and then deleting mail and Facebook accounts at the end. Deleting accounts was not intuitive at all but a simple google search sorted that out.

A good service and one I would probably use again.

Vinomofo is the best wine deals site on the planet. Good wines, real people and epic deals, without all the bowties and bs.

It appears they are kaput. Click on those links and get the following:

It's been a wonderful few years at Explora. Since we first stumbled across our idea to bring affordable, reliable, and unlimited telecommunications to the traveling public, we've had some wonderful results - amazing users, excellent reviews and really great traction. It's off the back of those great building blocks that we can announce today the sale of our company.
The identity of our purchaser is subject to a non-disclosure agreement; however, we're really proud that the technology we've built will be used to continue to provide awesome telecommunications solutions to travelers in other areas of the world.
So what is next? For now, we'll be taking some well earned time-off. We would like to thank everyone that supported us throughout: our investors, friends, family and most of all, our users.

Best,
Carl, Raj & Raquel

Hardly kaput - simply they (the original owners) have been bought out by an as yet undisclosed buyer.
