g'day all,

for some reason, in all my travels, i had never been to perth prior to monday this week.

when i landed in a a330-200 from BNE we pulled into the domestic terminal and came up to a gate alongside a 744-300. i was surprised to see one at the domestic terminal.

when i 'deplaned' ie: got off the plane i looked to see where this 743 was heading too and my suspicions were confirmed - SYD. there were alot of people getting on the plane (they were boarding at the time).

i am wondering where abouts at the SYD domestic terminal they put these planes. i have never seen a 743 at the domestic terminal in SYD. i realise that i am only there are little bit and that it is entirely possible the 743 is there when i am not.

can anyone satisfy my curiosity on this and on how often the 743 service is operated.

it was pretty cool to see that. i don't often see a 743 operating a domestic sector ...

Gate 8 or 9 from memory - when the 747 is docked at the gate, it also takes up the space for another gate, so QF needs ramp space for two gates to handle it, so they don't do it lightly.

Just as a bit of trivia, one of the gates in T2 is also 747 capable, can't recall the gate number, but it is the one directly in front of you as you walk down the concourse to the pier QF and JQ use - as you walk down the pier you will be staring straight at the radome of the 747 when it is docked.

I've boarded 747's in both; back one Summer/Autumn after AN's demise when Qantas ran 743's between SYD/CNS.

In T2 it's now known as Gate 49. As for T3, I think it may be the last gate (7?) on the straight row before the circular part of T3 they use for 747; they come in at almost 45º to the terminal, nosing into the corner where the aforementioned straight and circular terminal structures join. This makes the gate to left unusable.

747's have been used on domestic missions on and off for many years as demand dictates. There used to be a daily SYD-CNS 747 operation which I regularly saw parked at SYD T3. That one has been operated by 747-200, -300 and -400 over the years.

SYD-PER and even MEL-PER (I did that on a 747-SP back in late 2001) have also been operated by various 747 models over the years.

This SYD-PER operation is likely to remain in place for a while, as QF has the spare 747-300 capacity and is also planning the move of the A330-200 from QF mainline to JetStar International operations. I expect we will see the 743 on SYD-PER until the 787's arrive for QF mainline service or if the A330-200 return to QF mainline when the JQ International 787's arrive.

Currently there is either one or two (depends on day of the week) 743 operation SYD-PER-SYD, being flights QF575/580 and QF583/518.

I think that the T2 gate is Gate 49. Ihave never seen a 747 at that gate but I'm sure the gate can take one. Perhaps seeing a 743 on a purely domestic service is an indication of things to come way into the future in Oz.

G'Day,

If I'm not mistaken, they use Gate 7 (7 Alpha) at T3.

As you can see there are two possibilites for parking, namely parallel or 45 degrees. Antarctiv flights leave from here if I'm not mistaken.

Note between 27APR and 30JUNE, THU evening 743 SYD-PER-SYD services will be downgraded to 332 as will FRI morning 743 SYD-PER-SYD services during June.

Cheers

I caught the 19:25 flight from Sydney to Perth on Monday night.
Upgraded to business and sat in the bubble. Much better than the standard domestic service. The plane still has individual screens and a wide selection of movies, like old Qantas international. I try and get the larger planes such as the 743 or the airbus when travelling to the east coast, normally more comfortable than the 737s. Only downside is that it takes a while to load such a large amount of passengers. We left Syd T3 from gate 7. I went on one of those Antarctica day trips in 2004 and it also left from gate 7.

I just hope that I never have to deplane a 747 parked out on the tarmac somewhere in Perth. It's enough steps down when doing it from a 767!!

The QF terminal in PER really needs an expansion.

Why couldn't it use the airbridge at PER?

I've had the stairs for 747 thing at ADL, for the Antarctic flights, and yes took a long time for everyone to board.

They normally use the airbridge, and they normally do for 767's as well. But I have been out on the tarmac for a 767. Wouldn't like it for a 747.

Presumably, they will have an airbridge set aside for the 743 when they know it is coming!

The domestic terminal in Perth is seems to be suffering a great deal of congestion these days. Most flights I have been on that have landed early have resulted in us sitting around waiting for a bay to park in!

I don't know if QF have any expansion plans for Perth, but I hope they do something.

From memory I used the stairs deplaning from a 747 in ATH many years ago before the new airport was built.

The last 3 times I have landed from BNE we have been put in a standby pay (normally used by Qantas Link) and have to disembark via stairs that are pushed to the plane. (They are not even the ones that have a truck attached :))

Having only recently moved to WA I am not biased to Perth like the rest of the local parochial population, however most flights from major cities use bridges, I have only walked across the tarmac once and that was when getting off a 737. I find the airport to be fine in general, although the QP gets packed when flights to the 3 major east coast cities are leaving around the same time.

Am I the only one who like to use the external stairs, and enjoy the smell of burnt kerosene in the morning :?:

A few years back we deplaned a 747 by stairs on the tarmac at BKK then boarded the next flight also by stairs. They'd been waiting for us as our inbound flight was massively delayed.

Not so nice when its pouring with rain and a few hundred pax all trying to get out of the rain at the same time.

Not sure what making a comment about the terminal getting congested has to do with being parochial, but many flights these days don't use the airbridges. There are only three of them!

At the risk of being accused of parachiolism again, I will also say that the baggage carousel's don't seem to have been designed with a 747 load of baggage in mind.

So does the DJ terminal. It gets quite packed too.

I like doing this too. :D Whenever I fly SYD-MEL_SYD on DJ I use web-checkin and select a seat in row 30 at the back. Aside from the tarmac walk which is fun, it is a bit of exercise and it's as good as sitting up front because you can get off the plane quickly when you arrive.
