50 SC for signing up to Qantas Health Insurance

Looks like the offer is back.
5 days only... till 12 october.... 50SC...

A bit strange to me they do twice the same offer for the same product in such a short time, instead of trying an other type of insurance.

Obviously,.cant qualify if held qantas, nib, aami etc... In the last 6 months.

Also no waiver on 2-6 month extras.

Will have a look at what the cheapest possible cost for the SCs will be.

Were there any observed issues last time around from taking out this policy while also holding the same type of cover at another insurer?

I have a legacy product with another insurer and wouldn't want to lose it.

Very interesting. Was your primary health insurance one of nib / suncorp / aami, or do you think this would impacted the success of your strategy if it was?

No it was not. I don't have any idea whether that would impact success of this. I made no claims on the QF insurance during the time I held it and continued to use my main insurance as I normally would (including claims).

I think there's a lot of confusion around how holding two policies might affect you, and I admit I don't know it all, but I particpated in an earlier version of this promo and I found it pretty straightforward as long as you stick to a few fundamentals:
  • In my case, I signed up to the minimal cover which earned me the SCs
  • At no time did either insurer know about each other as I had no reason to contact my current insurer through the process, nor did they ask me about my current insurer except to confirm I did not have insurance with the insurers excluded from the promo
  • I declined any offer of an offset or government rebate
  • I ended the cover after the promo period
  • It did show up as an auto-fill line in my Tax return under my full-year insurer, but I simply deleted it and claimed 365 days coverage from my usual insurer as I was covered for the entire year by them.
No issues at all. I think if you stick to the fundamentals of not using the insurance (for claims, discounts or tax rebates) you are okay, you're simply swapping money for SCs. If you do need to claim or do use rebates, etc that's way out of my league but that ends up being more than just a cash for SCs proposition.

Pretty much the approach I took too. Only difference is tax time for FY22 hasn't come around yet for me.

I guess that means trying this strategy when being already insured with one of the excluded insurers (Aami, Nib, Suncorp and a few more) wouldn't work to get the 50SC, right?

I believe so, you'd very quickly exclude yourself as it does ask this during the quote process, and even if you were to state that you were not insured by an excluded provider, they'd have your customer details and I suspect it would get flagged pretty quickly.

The question asked when looking at applying is "Have you held a health insurance policy with Qantas, nib, AAMI, Apia, GU Health, or Suncorp in the last 6 months?"
When I login to my insurer, it says:
Mrs ChrisMars: Policy Holder
Me: Partner.

Does that mean that I don't hold a policy with them, even if I am insured with them via my partner's policy?
It first it seemed a bit far-fetched to me, but when I search a bit more for the definition of the policy-holder, seems like that would be the case. Thoughts?

Interesting, I honestly don't know, but you may be in luck. I'd check if there's a specific definition for the provider you're covered by, but Medibank Private defines Policy Holder this way:

The term policy holder refers to the person who ‘owns' the membership. This is the person we contact when we need to communicate important information.

And differentiates this from member, who is someone covered by the insurer.

Yea, similar wording in the Qantas insurance Policy Booklet, and same for my provider. Looks like I don't hold a policy at all at the moment, even if I am insured via my partner's policy.
T&Cs of the offer also refer to "Not available to customers who have held a health insurance policy with Qantas"
I'll sleep on it before applying.

so if I take up the minimum extras cover without hospital it displays as $38.78/month.

The signup shows 6,000 bonus Qantas Points.

I don't see any further mention of the 50SC though. Is it any policy that gets the SC or only specific combinations?

I think Qantas Health display the bonus QFF points because it varies with the cover you choose, while the SC are always 50SC for any covers.
There is also an article on the aff website, confirming that the lower extra without hospitals will still give you the 50SC.

thanks for that. here's my analysis for a minimum singles Qld policy.

so, taking the extras only Lifestyle package for 9 weeks (assuming I'll have to leave a day or so leeway) is 1.1c/point + 50SC.

In the back of my mind I know my travel plans up to the requal date. I'll be either well over, but nowhere near Plat or I'll be way short and this wont make a difference.

and like exceladdict I don't want to even play with my legacy product.

so having done the analysis, for me, it doesn't make sense.

You can actually make this points neutral almost. I signed up for the cheapest option. Paid using 8k points for plus about a week or two in cash extra. Got the bonus 6000 points plus you can earn points using the QF Wellbeing app. During the period of time I held QF health insurance I managed to earn 2006 points with the app.

Same, same experience 👍

Oh wow this NIB/Qantas Insurance really worked out for me.

1) Same premium as my old Medibank Private cover but up a level from Bronze to Silver cover
2) First month technically free thanks to the 30k points giveaway, so makes the whole deal even cheaper.
3) Status Bonus got me over the line to Platinum with no flights left during my membership year.

Now I hope NIB is as easy to deal with as MBP.
