claim the membership as a deduction on my tax return, saving 30% off the membership cost (pre salary sacrifice amount).
You do need to apportion which percentage is used for Business vs Personal Travel, I believe. So if it's 25% used for personal travel you can only claim the deduction on the 75% used for Business. You should seek advice from your tax accountant on this.

Personally I'd rather put money I could have spent on QANTAS Club towards obtaining/retaining Gold (or above) status and working towards Lifetime status.

I would much prefer Gold, especially lifetime Gold, but for those of us who struggle to maintain silver or less, these are the crumbs we can get.

I'm pretty sure the tax office would not take kindly to an attempt to simultaneously claim a tax deduction and a salary sacrifice on the same item.

The ATO doesn't take kindly to anything. Yes Yes, may need to consult an accountant, but it certainly sounds great.

This is true. I will have 4 business trips before EOFY, no personal. So technically 100% business.

I guess it depends on how close you are and how much value you put on Gold status.

Also if you reach Gold status your QP membership is paused till you drop back to Silver so if you buy the QP membership and then find some unexpected trips get you over the line to reach Gold status it’s not a waste. If you had 5 months left when reaching Gold when you drop back to Silver your 5 months left would resume.

You can't tax deduct something that you ares salary sacrificing, because you haven't paid the income tax on the money you used to buy it. One or the other, not both.

At the end of the day, since we have a self assessment system, there are all sorts of things that you can claim, which do not comply with the rules. The question you have to ask yourself is whether it's worth the risk if you get caught. Don't forget that lots of people get audited every year.

Surely the % personal to business use would have to be calculated over the life of the membership, not over the current FY? BTW, as a general rule, be careful about claiming that an expense is 100% for business use, when it's well known that most people would get at least some personal use out of it too. That's a red flag straight away, so unless you are confident that you can defend that position when the ATO query it, you might be wise to assign at least a small portion to personal use.
