1000 points for 5 transactions

Was awarded 6,000 bonus points - in 3 lots of 2x1000, and they have removed 9,000 - in 3 lots of 3,000, 1 lot on 1 day, 2 the day after.

Rang up AMEX, they looked through, and yes, they have made another mistake, they will reconcile, and the 3,000 points too many removed will be returned within 5 days.

I don't think the MR systems are very stable (at all), and not just the AMEX end.

Slight OT for this thread, but another example of flakey AMEX MR system processing follows.

Found a system error a few months back that looked like a great way to get free points (but called up and got them to sort it out, because I am sure they would have reconciled and caught up in the end - it took about 3 months and a few calls to get it resolved).

What happend, was a transfer of points to Malaysian Enrich. Was done online. Points went through fine to Malaysian within a couple of days (actually within advertised times), and were duly used for confirming upgrades. A couple of weeks later (after the end of month), AMEX MR is updated with "Request rejected by partner", and the points are returned. Somebody at AMEX decides it must be because there is no "MH" in front of the number, makes a change, and sends points off again. Later send some more points (more tickets needed), and guess what? - "Request rejected by partner". Who knows how long it would have taken AMEX to work out if they weren't prompted, but the redemption rate was looking pretty good for a while:p. Had to get things sorted, because we were ending up with excess points in Enrich (and not in AMEX depending on who was processing what), and don't know when we will be on MH again, and would prefer to leave them all consolidated.

I don't know they have actually fixed the problem either, I think someone has just manually processed corrections at both ends to get points balances back to what they should be, but they were successfully reversed out of Enrich and returned to AMEX somehow.

I'm also net 1,000 points in the hole. What is this, "punishment" for attempted abuse of a promo that should not have existed but we failed to tell Amex?

Oy gevalt.

If it wasn't for the fact that I do not have another credit card program that offers a more handsome rewards system, I'd probably give my Amex back and tell them where to shove it with interest.

I regret giving them a good rating on that survey they sent me now....
 
Add me to those that lost 1,000 points yesterday and 3,000 points today - though at least that took me back to zero in total, rather than with a negative total out of all this.
 
They took 1455 off mine, when I only got 1000 bonus. The CS hasn't been helpful either! You guys got any luck getting the rest back?

What type of card are you referring to?

Was the 1455 taken as one or two or several adjustments?

Has there been any other transactions reversed lately?

Mine's a reward maximiser and it was a single adjustment, which happened today.
 
I've just checked my account too. I earned 2,000 bonus points and all reversed. Annoying thing is I used the card at a number of places where I incurred a higher loading than I would have had I used my Citibank Visa, including paying over $ 4,000 tax to the ATO whereas I normally EFT it from my Chq A/c ( 1% = $40 + down the toilet !).

I'm out of pocket over their stuff up.

Maybe it was a con in the first place ? to increase their card usage. Seems illegal to initially post the points on our statements with a notation "bonus 1000 for 5 transactions" and send a message to their users to increase their usage and then say later after everyone ramps up their usage...... "sorry we made a mistake"

Why should we be the ones to pay ?

Any chance the Financial Services Ombudsman ( or whatever is the correct title) would look at this whole schemozzle with Amex's latest (non) promotion and tell them to return the points ?.

Maybe they just wanted to see what impact the readers of FF have and how soon the word spreads ?? Are they smart enough to do that and then put a big back asterix against our card numbers not to send us future promotions ?

Maybe the CIA is involved and it is a plot to supress the impact of FF spreading and target us true beleivers in trying to beat THEIR systems?

or maybe they are just as dumb as dog$%^& and stuffed up ??

Any thoughts ??

How are you out of pocket?

A MR should be worth at least 1 cent per point.
Therefore if you card earns at 1 point per $ you have broken even.

If you earn at 1.25 to 1.5 you will have made a profit.


If you redeem for a long haul international flight it should be worth say 2 cents a point. So a profit.

Personally (for what I redeem for) if faced by choice of a 1% surcharge for Amex over using cash/eft I would use my Amex and be in front.

Personally I think it is good that Amex makes "mistakes" as it provides opportunity for extra earn from time to time.

This however means that one has to take the good with the bad.

Yes in this instance one would hope that Amex would just make some "goodwill" points payments...but by the same token if you accidently transferred some money to the wrong person would you let them keep it, or would you ask for it back?

Exactly. So many of us have gained very significant amount of MR points due to Amex's previous unintended "generosity", yet at the slightest issue, seem ready to sue Amex's pants off!:shock:

While it would have been nice for there to have been such a promotion applicable to us, unfortunately it was not to be. However, it was unannounced so anyone trying to take advantage of it was doing so at their own risk.

Certainly a stuff up of some sort, compounded by the fact that for some of us, they have reversed out more points than were incorrectly given to begin with.
