Vinomofo Wine Deals

Interesting graph by Alan Kohler on the ABC news last night. I can't screenshot it for some reason but if you watch on iview and skip to about 25:00mins it shows that wine to China has increased by $1b+ in the last year and decreased by 13% everywhere else. The Chinese don't have issues with RRP and prefer "the expensive posh wine", apparently.

Amazing what normalising relationship with China has done, unlike some previous years.

It's probably why we've all been buying up big - carpe diem! That's an interesting thought, about Chinese buyers noticing or being impressed by expensive RRP. With so many wines available ie so much competition, it's extremely difficult to stand out if you're not already known : regardless of how good your product is. So some makers continually cut their margins. Probably unwise, because consumers are highly suggestible, & discounting instead causes buyers to believe the product is lesser quality. So some makers & marketers do the exact opposite, i.e multiply a nominal 'reasonable' price X 3, or 5, or 10, then wait to see what happens. Back in the heady days, this worked very well for those with the chutzpah, like D Powell with Torbreck, & C Ringland with 3 Rivers (partly after love from Robert Parker stirred things up). And in saying this, I'm not suggesting they didn't & don't make great wines, although I won't be one of the buyers, because I'm with the earlier commenters when it comes to the price\enjoyment graph.

Some years ago, a new nepotism was appointed as CEO of Penfolds, he made the disastrous decision to seriously cut prices of Penfolds premium wines in the uk.

Was a complete disaster and almost destroyed the brand quality and reputation in the uk.

Thanks for this. I ordered the 2020 Reverend Canon last Thursday so it hasn’t arrived as yet. I will give it a couple of days to settle before I try it and then post my thoughts.I noticed it sold out pretty quickly.
And I was wrong about the other Sorby saints : they're all different. Just bought a dozen of the St Hugh 2021 which is mainly Eden Valley fruit. Would've preferred to buy 6 of each saint's 2021 offering (there's also Boniface & Aidan), out of interest. I asked, but no, only available as dozens.

After pay offering $50 off your first order (min spend $51) which can be used with Vinomofo.

I tried it and it didn't work for me. Probably for the very first Afterpay order

Edit:The promotion is available to new Afterpay customers and existing Afterpay customers who have not yet completed a purchase.

Since we've been picking on Ron Brown of Maverick for his pricing, because evidently his top wines are not in a league befitting such $ (while not noticing that Rockford, Dave Powell, Chris Ringland & others have never been coy about asking big $, and why should they be, in a free market? We don't have to buy, & it's a bit like art ie "what you can get away with"). Anyway, to be fair, these Maverick wines are well and carefully made, from some of the best Barossa grapes available, and have been consistently rated by professionals and gifted amateurs alike. Eg an Ahrens Ancestor Shiraz was in the lineup of Halliday's top shiraz 2024, where it looks a bit cheap against Ringland Hoffman or Torbreck's Laird (I'm kidding. I'd never pay $800 for a wine & the winner was about $50, interestingly). I say this having no reason to promote Maverick, no agenda, and no idea (yet) whether I will even like the Ahrens 2021 at all. I may not, and the price won't determine that, either.
And I will add that - despite having mentioned Wine Companion et al above - I'm very sceptical about ratings of wine : several of my all time favourites are unrated & ignored by the experts.
The following link gives anyone who's interested, a bit of relevant background -
The Craneford 2019 Fire Station at $35 down from $130 befits the high prices that winemakers ask but I just can't do it. It has some good numbers but reading between the lines, it's still young so like a newly married bride or groom, you just don't know what you are going to get in a decades time. Jimmy Watson trophy winners have had the mud thrown at them for being one year olds but I don't think anyone has ever had a bad one. Redbigot would certainly have some stories in this regard I am guessing. I worked for a dozen years next door to Watson's wine bar in Carlton which was a magic time for all. Allan, Jimmy's son running the show with his own 2 boys helping out. Anyway, it all gets down to what you want and not to be disappointed getting it. Fancy enjoying a bottle of this Craneford and returning the other 5. That's not what i would do anyway but I know $35 is a sweet spot for many here. Concerning the Mavericks, i loved all of their value reds a decade ago. the shiraz, the gsm, all of them were supurb and amazing value. Never tried their dearer ones but surely pedigree is something to be proud about. Different years, different growing conditions i get but good is good remember.

Yeah, the price reduction of the Fire Station 2019 tempted me, but I'm still buying mostly 2021 and I'd already bought the Thistledown Bachelors Block Shiraz 2021 for $35pb today, so passed. But the night's not over yet I guess.
I've never been a big follower of JWT, especially when barrel samples rather than bottled wines were allowed. There has been the occasional scandal after the event though.

There's one from a while back, Thistledown. I think two British guys who set up in the Barossa, one a master of wine. I remember one of the shhhpiels on the back label of their shiraz, something to do coming to the fork of the road and taking the road less travelled. Nice wording i thought and I enjoyed their wine, a Vinimofo offering. So they must be doing something right for you to buy their reduced to thirty five bucker and good luck to them. In it for the right reasons. I never actually knew the Jimmy entrants could send in barrel samples. Now that is an absolute fiasco. Doesn't tarnish Wolfies 3 I hope.

I also purchased it from Grays and had a bottle. Very enjoyable. I quite liked their Grenache also.
Yes, I'd previously bought the BB and enjoyed it too.
Not so much the Thistledown Where Eagles Dare Shiraz 2021, the bottle we had started Ok then was ruined by a long streak of sharp acid dominating the mid-to-finish.

Not sure when they changed the rules to disallow barrel samples, 15-20 years ago I think.

Interesting rundown here, including noting one scandal.

This is a bit off track because mof_ doesn't seem to sell it currently, but anyone tried Schoolhouse Block A2 Coonawarra 2021 Shiraz & care to comment?
