I know that platinum get free upgrade to economy X on domestic flights if they are available but was wondering if you are gold and request it in the lounge before the flight do they have the ability to approve it?

Just wondering because today on my flight there was almost no one sitting in the economy X seats. The plane was pretty empty in general though so everyone had plenty of space anyway lol

I don't believe so, generally if requesting an economy X seat, those without WP status need to pay - even in the lounge.

If the flight is full and they need the seats then they be had at no charge.

Yeah thats what i assumed. I reckon that alone would make the difference between WP and SG well worth it!

Previously when Gold only I've asked in the Lounge and had a reply along the lines of we can only do so when the plane is at X capacity. Perhaps X isn't the right letter choice! But it seemed if it were fuller they'd allow Econ X seats to Gold but if it's too light it was a no.

Who knows whether that's factual or whether it was a blow off but seems semi reasonable.

As a gold member I've also been told I'd have to pay when asking at check-in.

You will generally only get Economy X for free if
a) It is an emergency exit row, and they need people to sit there
b) the flight is full and they need to put people somewhere

Having said that, it does sometimes happen that the gods are smiling and all that, and your request will succeed. But don't count on it.

Check with lounge staff prior boarding if seat next to you is free. If not ask for better seat, it won't be X but at least there is nobody right next to you. It's not X but I prefer to have empty seat next to me rather than sit in full X row.

On the 737 it's free upgrade to economy X once more than 140 pax checked in, of still available for gold. Have used that a few times!!

I received a complimentary upgrade to Economy X in August after my original flight was cancelled and I was put on the last flight out of Hobart which then ended up being delayed and caused an issue with my connecting international flight out of Melbourne - I was originally taken off the flight not long after check in and told I would be flying the next morning but I managed to get put back on to the flight and just before I had my new boarding pass printed asked to be in a seat as far forward as possible so I could exit quickly.
Received boarding pass and saw 3A and did not realise until I boarded it was an Economy X seat.

Most recent flight most forward Economy X seats were vacant and the CSM made announcement that as there were some spare seats through the cabin and after take off just ask the cabin crew about moving except you could not move to an Economy X seat.
