Expert AFFers. I seem to be missing something quite basic here so any help would be appreciated.

I have 230K points and have been doing some preliminary looking for the future to get two 140K (Y) Oneworld Award tickets towards the end of the year when I should have accumulated the necessary points..

I signed in; chose Multi City and Qantas and Partner Award flights; and, selected dates and flights for the following:
CNS to GLA (via MEL and LHR) on JQ, QF and BA;
GLA to YYZ (via LHR) on BA and BA;
YYZ to ORD on AA;
ORD to SYD (via JFK) on AA and QF;
SYD to BNE on QF; and,
BNE to CNS on QF.

This seems to comprise no more than two transfers in one location, only five stopovers, all Oneworld partner flights, less than sixteen flights, more than three different carriers and less than 35K miles (I calculate approximately 28.3K). It seems to me to meet the rule requirements, however, the total points come out as 402K points and it doesn’t ‘switch’ to the classic Oneworld costing of 280K points.

Any suggestions as to what I am missing? I bet it is something pretty basic.

Perhaps the issue is JQ? I'm not sure if they count as OW.

Yeah you can't use Jetstar. Oneworld only for this one.

I thought you could use Jetstar as long as it has a QF flight number...........trying to find the reference

Do the QF codes come up under the FF search? Can't say I've ever looked to be honest. I did search once for a Oneworld award that included a QF code on an SAA flight from PER-JNB. I have a slight memory that it did work... So you could be correct

Cause 14.3.5 of Terms and Conditions of Classic Awards says that you can only have one departure from the country of origin. All your flights after arriving in SYD are invalid

The OP only leaves Australia once so I don't see this rule being breached. The problem will be the JQ flight.

I've got three. How many are allowed? I could change to two flights within Australia (by cutting out the BNE stopover) - would that help?

I think with this one you have to do trial and error -drop the JQ flight if it has a JQ number and see if it works. Otherwise do the in and out only with no other stops in Australia. Let us know how you go.

Are any of your transits over 24 Hours? (Not stopovers.)

It works for me when I put it in with the 5 stopovers (>24 hours) being GLA, YYZ, ORD, SYD & BNE.

I can only presume that you have put in some of the intermediate flights separately and stayed more than 24 Hrs?

Many thanks to all for your assistance. I do believe it must have been the JQ thing that was the problem. There were no 24+ hour stopovers aother than the final flight destinations.

I've tweaked it and find that the following works and still gets me to the places I want to be (although in a slightly different order -- and it switches to OneWorld Award and 280K points!!

CNS to BNE on QF;
SYD to GLA (via HKG and LHR) on CX, CX and BA
GLA to YYZ (via LHR) on BA and BA;
YYZ to ORD on AA;
ORD to SYD (via DFW) on AA and QF; and,
SYD to CNS on QF.

I do find the search facility a little non-helpful and in many cases have to restrat the whole itinerary with different date combinations when I come across a brick wall re seat avaialbility. A real first-world problem!!

Does anyone know if you can book a oneworld award as an ASA if there is classic award availability? If you can has anyone had any luck changing their classic award fare to an ASA over the phone?

I do not believe this can be done. xASA rules seem to be based on existing commercial point to point (one-way or return) fares, while the QFF oneworld award is a different 'creature'.

hi all. it's almost time for me to book my 280k trip for 2015. The first leg of the trip should be available in the next few days. I'm thinking of building the trip up as the legs become available (I realise this will cost extra points to add/rebook if I do it over the phone). My question is if I book the first few flights on Qantas using the multi city can I go into the booking a few weeks later and add more flights or do I need to call the frequent flyer centre for them to add them (which will attract the 3500 points fee) ??
A second question is if I can't add more flights to the booking on the website can I at least change dates to already booked flights ?

Yes, all done from the Qantas site.
First log in to your account, then select Multi City option for flights and tick the Search Qantas & Partner Classic Awards box and then go for it. Just watch that you don't select any partner, non-OneWorld flights (eg EK or JQ). Enjoy.

For amendments you'll need to call the FF Centre or at least I did when changing flights, never added another flight. I'd imagine it would be the same however.

When end I booked my one world award, I booked the Sydney - Santiago flight as soon as I could because I knew there weren't many available. However the rest I just booked when they were all available and pretty much got what I wanted. The 3500 points is the change fee no matter whether you change on the phone or internet. When you change on the phone (which you need to do to add more flights) they also charge you $80 or I think you can pay 8000 points.

Therefore my my advice is do your research as to which routes are hard to get any maybe book those as so as you can but the rest try and book a few together at the same time.

I thought I read it somewhere in this thread but couldn't find it again - is it possible to make date changes to any of the flights once the first leg has been flown? Can you add extra flights to the trip?

Asking because I'm having some difficulty booking flights in advance as they have not been released yet, and since the first leg is coming up I am thinking of changing our travel dates to suit if required...

I have underlined the pertinent part below. Wich, by omission, indicates you cannot change routing on a ticket once travel has commenced if the booking includes travel on "flight segments not within Oz": (Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions - 14. Redeeming Qantas points for Qantas & Partner Classic Awards)

...14.7.6 Subject to this clause 14.7, the following changes are permitted to a Classic Award flight before departure of that flight, provided your booking contains one or more Flight Segments that are not within Australia, and the Flight Segment(s) being changed do not include a partner airline that requires a ticket to be reissued for the change. Any such change will incur a Change Fee (see the Fee Schedule) per passenger:
(a) change to flight number; and
(b) change to date of travel.

Hi. Thankyou for responding. Yeah I've grouped flights together so I'll only need to do in 4 bookings.
There are definitely one or two segments that have limited availability for 2 people bus class. Eg. Mia to nrt on aa61.
I've really taken my miles right up to the 35000 miles limit.
