Background to this thread
We have noticed an increase in the posting of questions about seat availability on specific flights. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with specific questions about availability on specific flights. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.
We have therefore created this new consolidated thread where you can ask questions about seat availability on specific flights. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve useability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread
Please post questions about availability of specific flights or upgrade probability in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, date, origin and destination and any other relevant detail.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

If looking for, say Qantas points upgrades, look for A class for First, mid to high D or any I class for Business and any R for Premium Economy.

Look for the most expensive category of the cabin YOU are currently booked in as being sold out e.g. J0 to first, W0 to Business & Y0 to PE for increased op-up chances. Also, look for availability on the discount premium buckets (A, P, I, D, U, T & Z inventories).

Conversely, look for high numbers in the discount economy buckets (N, O, Q, E & X inventories) for reduced op-up chances.

Seat maps can be a VERY rough guide but note that just because a seat is not showing as allocated does not mean that seat hasn't been sold. Not everyone pre-selects seats.

I'm still pretty new at all this. I looked up the flight loadings for QF107 on May 7th in Economy on www.flightstats.com and got:

W5, R5, T1, Z0, Y9, B9, H9, K9, M9, L9, V9, S9, N9, Q9, O9, G0, X9, E0.

Do all those 9's indicate a lightly loaded flight? How does one tell if there are literally 9 empty seats or if there are potentially 90 empty seats? What can be extrapolated from the different classes i.e. some being 9 and some being 0? I'm keen to learn more about this.

My understanding is the the 9 means there are nine or more seats in that basket. I look at seatmap in EF for a particular flight to see which seats are:
1. Occupied
2. Blocked, and
3. Showing as free

I have taken the free plus blocked figure to give an idea of how full it is at that point.

I'm only a NB. I don't understand why they seat maps are so different!

When I initially asked about this a while back I was told that it had to do with the handover of control to the ground staff at the terminal. Perhaps there is a filter in the EF data feed that produces a slightly different answer when a flight ins down to T-1/T-2. I know there was a long discussion about the same issue in relation to EK flights a week or two ago, where there was a similar discrepancy.

Strange indeed

EF showed a lot of blocked seats on QF107 but plenty of empty seats on QF11 on the same day.

Must be some operational reason by QF - that would be my guess.

I have not seen this so far with any of my flights with QF, however.

Most (if not all) of the time, EF gives you an accurate seat map of QF flights as seen from MMB.

"Blocked seats" do not comes from EF, it could only come from QF's information as sent to EF.

As to why, your guess is as good as mine.

I tried to look up some flights on flightstats as per the first post on this thread by my flights don't come up - any help? My flights are about 4 weeks away so I wasn't going to ask someone to look it up for me just yet but it seems I can't even do it myself. (I tried QF 23 SYD-BKK on June 6 but it doesn't show it)

The error code I got was "Sorry, we could not find the flight QF 23 in our system". Any help?

"J5 C6 D5 I4" means Qantas are willing to sell no more than 6 seat in business class.

Thanks Serfty. I knew there was a reason I was hanging back asking . Just needed time to clear my head and sit down for a few hours (days?) and go through this thread.

Nevertheless it was worth asking as at at least now I have a better idea of where to start (DUH.....the start of the thread)
