Am wondering why people chase status through status runs rather than just joining Qantas Club?

From a quick look, it seems like for a little over $500 a year you get access to QP throughout aus and overseas (granted not business lounge) and emirates business lounge in dubai and AA Admirals lounges throughout the world. Also get priority check-in (not sure about boarding).

So, if you were likely to travel mostly economy, it seems that this is better value than chasing status? Or am I missing something?

Cheers!

- Bonus FF points
- Higher up in the pecking order for upgrades
- Access to better seats
- Access to One World lounges (not just QF/EK/AA)
- Access to QF first lounges

the list just goes on!

Thanks for that opusman. I am asking from the perspective of a bronze, who will likely make silver this year, but will not likely ever get above scraping into Gold. So some of those other benefits would not apply to my situation. Cheers.

For me huge benefit is the J lounges at the major airports

The better food/wine/spirits and generally more quiet makes it worth it for me

Is that with platinum or gold? My understanding is that gold only qualifies for standard, not j lounges?

Well, yes, that's the trick. If your flying will only ever get you to bronze/silver and if the QP satisfies your needs, then your QP strategy is probably OK. But if you can get to gold via a 'status run', then some additional perks come into play. Just a cost/benefit equation.

That said, I must say I've never done a status run and can't imagine forking out $$ to do so.

Also, reading through the qp "benefits" it mentions a dedicated qp check in for international flights - what exactly is this and how wide spread is its availability? Do they just mean the priority (business, first) counter at international check in?

I think they are referring to entering the QP and using the check in counters in there.

The simple answer.

People come to AFF for advice and end up taking useless flights to get status to make life easier in case they need to take more useless flights in the future. It then becomes a catch-22 situation....

Domestically yes, international J lounge is standard and F lounge is for WP.

Don't forget status gives you free international seat selection and priority security in the US with AA.

thanks for that, still confused though. My experience departing Sydney for international flight - you go to the check in desks before security screening etc - and isn't the qantas club after security screening? Hmmm might just have to call them, thanks though! Cheers

I haven't flown international since 2011 but at the time they did have check in for Qantas club members.

Thanks. As in one qantas club check
in desk for all flights? Or a qantas club line at each flight check in? Or just use of the priority check in desk? Cheers!

Also, does anyone know how much the discount is for silver members to join qp compared to the $855 bronze joining fee? Cheers

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

In most airports, there is a separate check in desk for Qantas Club/Oneworld Ruby/Premium Economy for all Qantas flights. IIRC, Qantas does not have allocate a check in counter to a specific (with the exception of flights to the USA). In SYD, the counters (together with Business Class check in and First Class check in) are completely separate from the general economy check in area and are located on the other side of check in area D.

I wouldn't compare Qantas Club to Gold/OW Sapphire. Being able to get into any OW lounge around the world is great :)
