Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Virgin Australia allegedly split their business into domestic & international arms so that they could take a financial stake from the likes of Etihad in one 'airline' without upsetting the overall balance in terms of foreign ownership regulations, as AirNZ already has a decent stake in Virgin. Could the Qantas split into domestic & international also have something like that in mind, maybe an investment from Emirates?
 
Not the same - all the businesses are still owned by Qantas Group (sorry don't know the actual company name) so unless they spin off one business and float it separately *cough* QFF *cough* no-one can take an investment in the subsids. Well technically they could sell shares in the subsid to a third party and create a minority interest but it wouldn't impact the overall ownership model.

It is very hard for a Australia/New Zealand based passenger, to fly One World to the Middle East, North/West/East Africa and India.
A codeshare with a middle eastern carrier would fix plenty on the QF Route Map.
Despite my avatar, I was/am hoping Qatar Airways would be that partner.

Does QF codeshare with RJ at all? RJ fly to BKK (and also KUL & HKG as extension of BKK).

Emirates offer by far a greater and more direct network than RJ, but it doesn't seem like QF is making the most of its OW partners.

Wonder how BA would feel if QF starts using Emirates as an alternate partner to Europe.

RJ would have to upgrade its product a lot.

Surprised it doesn't utilise AY a lot more - using Helsinki as a gateway into Europe makes much more sense for most European destinations than LHR does.

Also thought they don't use CX enough - the only QF/CX codeshare I've seen is Rome-HKG.

I'd quite happily do a QF codeshare on EK metal. IMHO EK has probably the best HARD F product on the market.

I can quite easily see myself on the way to LHR via DXB in 1A on the EK A380. (After a massage and a meal in th QF F Lounge.)

As others have mentioned, if QF starts offering codeshares on Emirates metal, it’s the end of QFi, but I’m sure a better partnership would be allowing those booking on Emirates to Australia to also book a connecting domestic flight, thus stopping Qantas losing business to the far bigger airline. It gives Emirates customers a better experience but doesn’t devalue QFi.

However, on that partnership, weren't the rumours of Etihad eventually joining OW, so if that happened we’d all have to switch partners again. DJ gets Emirates back and QF, Etihad? So confusing.

Searched Melbourne to Colombo (Sri Lanka) on Qantas website for a date in November and it is showing as MEL-SIN QF9 then SIN-CMB EK349.
It is showing as a green square - codeshare.

Really? What makes you say that...don't make assumptions. It would be very sad to see QF go that's meaning behind that statement.

Have a look also at samh004 - he/she nails it on the head and conveys the same meaning - ie. if QF codeshare with EK it could well be the end of QFi. They're not exactly keen on expansion with their own aircraft.

Probably not, but QF/BA/AA are all pretty cosy.

QF/CX or KA is a love-hate relationship, which probably explains the rationale in QF's China network (and possibly Jetstar Hong Kong). But, CX do service HKG-FCO for QF.

JL is too brittle.

MH is a strong possibility once they finally come onboard.

AY - well there are some small ones there.

AB - not sure yet.

S7 - perhaps (but S7 are happy to offer flights to Australia on QF metal, as some people have just as happily discovered)

Bottom line is they are probably using them OK, but in the end most people here on AFF want more metal services, not more codeshares. Plus, the BA codeshares are near moot on this board because more than half the members here hate transiting LHR.

Well BA are supposed to be picking up more pax on BKK-LHR and HKG-LHR after Qantas cut these routes. Apart from that, I'd like to think they wouldn't give a damn (especially under the auspices of the larger IAG consortium).



Whilst this sounds exciting in theory, QF have tried the tie up with ME carriers before and failed miserably (OK, probably didn't help that the EY CEO was best buddies with JB). Is this a case of, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em?"

Also, if this tie up occurs, I can't see QF being serious about this without considering a service (full, i.e. include F class) to DXB; viz. VA flying to AUH.

Nevertheless, I don't think it'll be the downfall of QFi - QFi will maintain its small reach as it already is, possibly consolidating on a few key international points. Not ideal for those who want to fly Qantas metal, and damn straight it better be easier to return to profitability (no excuses there).

The worst case out of this is another media ballet, wasted time and effort and the resulting financial retribution that goes with it, plus more reputational capital sucked down the airline toilet.

Well if it’s part of the plan, all they’d have to do is offer better rates for the codeshare through Dubai to the UK than through SIN/BKK/HKG and soon enough, there’d be no use flying 'that route'. Maybe that’s the plan, get out of the business, by having everyone take another carrier because you’re offering that carrier at a better price than your own metal.

With the majority of my points spent flying business to London there is no way I will use Qantas and run the risk of being on BA again. What a hideous experience

It would've been on your confirmation and the website though?

Completely agree, however it's difficult enough using QFF for European business flights on Classic. If one needs to then remove code-shares then even less chance.. It also doesn't make up for the abomination that is BA!

QANTAS is expected to ink a codeshare deal with Dubai-based Emirates next week.
Details of the deal have yet to be confirmed but recent indications have been it will involve putting a service through or to Dubai, and possibly pulling the flying kangaroo's loss-making service to Frankfurt.

As I posted (here back toward the beginning o' the year) anything less than some form of agreement that includes Emirates (network-wide) lounge access for Qantas card holders (Club, Gold, Platinum & Lounge) will not work, and put that up against Status earn and other Virgin privileges on Etihad, and Qantas simply remains second class in the race for frequent fliers to Europe/Mid East.

IMO Qantas may now actually be better off waiting for Qatar to fully come to the party if Emirates won't. (It's not a "Network-Now" or "Capital-Light" solution, but QF needs more than codeshares from EK before they hand over the keys to their FF database.)

I can't see Emirates giving lounge access to QC members. Gold & Platinum maybe, but not QC!

I do hope this comes together as a full tie up though. Earning QF points & status credits on EK metal would be a dream for someone like me based in Perth.
