What hotels do you recommend in either the general midtown or Times Square areas? Looking for something affordable but not so small that you can't swing a cat in as I'm going to be spending a few days there while passing through with all 96kg+ of camera gear.

Hi RSD In March had a nine night stay at Hampton Inn Times Square North - part of the Hilton group. Large rooms/breakfast included as well as free all day coffee/tea and sometimes cookies. Location was great within walking distance of subways, Central Park. Down the street was a Food Emporium Supermarket and there were others close by and opposite the hotel was a wine shop. Staff great, asked for a small fridge to be put in the room and they did that straight away. Breakfast good and many choices of cereal, fresh fruit, waffles etc etc ( plastic omelettes a bit ordinary) - worth a look tough and good value. If it matters there was also a TJ Maxx and Daffy's within walking distance.

I have stayed at the Double Tree on Lex and the Double Tree Suites on Times Square - not that cheap (not that any hotel is cheap in NYC) - both were a good size - esp. compared to say the W that was awful.

Have stayed at the Crowne Plaza in midtown. The rooms are large (for NY standards) and there is a heavy discount if travelling in the low season. Location is amazing.

When are you travelling?

Have only stayed Upper West Side (perhaps a little beyond your parameters - about 30 mins walk down Broadway to Times Square), at Hotel Lucerne which was quite nice.

I stayed at the Roger Williams - its on Madison Avenue at the south end of Midtown - terrific location, got a VERY good deal for Manhattan (sub $200 per night in May) - the hotel is boutique but very slick and funky fit-out. Rooms are normal size for NYC - bathrooms are fairly small. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

I stayed there too and agree.

I've got two trips through New York in the next 12 months - one is going to be for New Year's eve with my new partner (it's taken 42 years but RSD has finally found that someone special so her xmas present is going to be a trip to New York - only decided on that trip today), the other will be in Mid-April 2013 for about a week between assignments.

Kimberly Hotel - good sized rooms/suites @ good price. 50th St between Lex & 3rd

I recently stayed at the Hilton NY Fashion District hotel... it's about a 10 minute walk to Times Sq, and about 5 minutes to Madison Square Garden/Penn station for the airport train to EWR if you're using that airport at all. Two subway stations to Times Sq - the 1 train (red line). We stayed for 6 nights, and the total cost was about $1200USD - and as I have HHonors Gold, that included free wi-fi (unlimited number of devices), as well as free cooked breakfast each day for my partner and I (which was quite amazing - you either select a few things from the menu, or choose the buffet (where a number of hot items are available). It was worth it to pay the extra $10-$20/day for a guaranteed high floor room, as you are far away from the cars honking, people yelling, and the sirens. The hotel is very new, so all in-room amenities are modern (wall-mounted HDTV with HD cable channels), a Nespresso-like machine, safe, and a proper shower (NOT a shub (shower-tub))! :D Friendly staff, floor-level security in the lifts, security staff in the foyer at night... I'd definitely stay here again, particularly as the Hilton Times Square hotel was ~$2000 for the same dates, and is in a considerably noisier area. :)

Just looking into hotels of interest (free room wifi? Breakfast included?) that would be near (easy walking distance) Penn Station.

Planning on staying forc6 nights, then catching a 3am train from Penn Station to Washington (night 7 not happening, just store luggage till train departs / luggage checkin required).

Done a map search witg names of hotels right at the station, as well as around the corner.

Other then listed, any affordable one less then $350 or so a night?

Congrats, how did the trip go?
