Hello Fellow Nomads,

I'm based in Adelaide and have noticed Qantas have started to replace the 737s with 767s on some of the domestic routes at busier times. Unfortunately this means the chance of Op-Ups are now almost non-existent.

Perhaps I've been spoilt but I'm used to always getting the pick of the Economy Seats and thus always choose Row 4 so I can stretch my legs out completely. I've discovered Row 23, the front row in the 767-300, doesn't allow this due to the bulkhead. I did a walk of the plane to check out all the seating and the legroom didn't appear to be better anywhere else, even the Exit Rows looked cramped.

Is there an Economy Seat with better legroom or am I best to try and avoid the 767s where possible, as I spent most of the flight standing up last time, due to feeling so cramped?

I'm open to any suggestions you may have.

Not sure that 767s reduce the chance of op-ups. They have more J seats than a 737.

As for seats I'm learning this as well as I've been getting the afternoon 767s SYD-ADL as much as possible. I've found the second exit row around 34 is alright. There is also some aircraft that have a good row 24, 24F I think, that has no seat in front of it in row 23.

Are there any patterns as to which type of the 767's QF operate in and out of ADL?

Row 44 on the old BA birds are probably one of the better seats in a 767 you will find

For me, I have only ever seemed to get Op-Ups when Economy was overbooked, hence now there are far more seats, I would've thought the chance of this happening is a lot less?

Second exit row is Row 44 - does that sound right?

On the 767s I've been on so far, I'm not sure there's been a vacant space in front of 24F but I'll be sure to lookout for it in future when selecting my seat so thanks for the tip. On my next such flight the seat map indicates a 767-300/300ER configuration with again no gap in front of 24F. Hopefully the config changes a few days before takeoff to this "special one".

Interesting I always try to snag 23B on the 767 and am ever cramped - I am 185cm so not a midget. In fact my PA is under orders to now get a 767 rather than 73x. There are some international configs (row 23/24 missing for crew rest areas) that don't have a 23F so 24F has more leg room than any other whY seat you will find.

I've been getting QF761 SYD-ADL on Fridays and this has been a 767. In fact I'm on that flight this Friday and the seat map is showing the great 24F and exit rows as 34 and 35. If the bulkhead is no good I would suggest rows 34/35.

The other flight is QF759 SYD-ADL that is usually claiming to be a 767. That's 2 aircraft on a Friday that arrive in ADL at 1600 and 1700. It might be worth check where they go. Unfortunately, I've never thought to check that detail.

I've also had a morning flight to DRW that has been a 767.

they are pretty rare. I have limited 767 flights, maybe 4 this year. They all usually show the good 24F on the seat map at the time of sale, but invariably that changes to different 767 or to a 737.

Thats another thing, I usually try to select a J/K seat, which doesn't exist on a 737, in case they swap aircraft and I end up down the back.

For the B767's that are the 30/214 config. VH-ZX* ex BA there is only one exit row which is 43. There is plenty of leg room as it's opposite the crew seats where the F/A's sit for take-off and landing. Another good seat on this same aircraft is row 23AB & 23JK as although it is a bulkhead row the bulkhead partition behind J does not go all the way to the floor enabling you to stretch your legs out.

The other B767's that are either the (domestic) config. of 30/222 or intl config. on 25/204 VH-OG* both have exit rows of 34 & 35 but I would recommend row 35 as you can stretch your legs & put them underneath the seat in front whereas row 34 you are more limited as you have the wall in front of you. Exit rows would be a better choice on these a/c as row 23 has limited leg room due to the wall in front of you. If you can't get row 35 then 24F on the intl config is great as there is no seat in front of you.

There can be a/c swaps frequently so whilst it still may be a B767, if you had row 43 on ZX* on the new a/c row 43 on OG* will just be a normal row.

why are the 767's between Syd and Adel so old. I flew one last Friday and the TV's were all black and white?

I would suggest that the problem is not limited to the 767's that fly between SYD and ADL. Between the 747's and the 767's, the average age is not that young. Most of them were manufactured in the 90's sometime, with only a handful being from the later 90's/2000's
