Their 787 went past the runway before becoming airborne yesterday. Got to 9000 feet. dumped fuel and returned to Munich. Several tyres blew on landing and stuck for while disrupting traffic

Two interesting short videos regarding this incident.

From inside the cabin. Flaps are down and I have no idea if they are the correct level. The takeoff roll seems to be very 'laboured' to my untutored eye. The video also shows that they were on the grass for quite a way.

The second video is from the ground on the runway and shows what appear to be skid marks at the very end of the runway heading into the grass.

The plane seems to reach a certain speed and then… nothing… just keeps going at the same speed. Until it runs out of runway.
 
There are images showing both a large hole ripped in the tail and also multiple holes in the vertical stabiliser.
 
What a bizarre series of events.

I don't see how the pilots come out of this looking good. The runway at MUC is very long. I heard one rumour in German aviation circles that the brakes were partially applied during the take-off roll.

Those 'skid marks' in the video I posted above look a bit that way.

Flex or "derated" thrusts became very common with "digital" FADEC - full authority digital engine control or similar depending on engine manufacturer

Prior to that the I think the flight engineers would have had to manually calculate it using engine performance charts.

It was to prolong engine life and reduce maintenance because full thrust takeoffs was associated with extreme internal temperatures. So it was used when departing with less payload, longer runways and favourable takeoff conditions like headwind, cool weather

I think the 747-400 had them but not the classics.

The opposite of derate thrust would be thrust augmentation using water injection which reduced internal temperatures and increased mass airflow allowing more fuel . Not used these days but the 747 classics had them

"According to the chief pilot's report, the aircraft began its takeoff on runway 26L. Approximately halfway down the runway, the crew noticed that the aircraft's speed did not increase for about two seconds. After that, the speed increased again, and the aircraft continued its takeoff run until it reached V1 – the target speed for takeoff.

However, after reaching V1, the flight crew noticed a decrease in the aircraft's speed. The pilots assessed that the remaining runway distance was insufficient to abort takeoff, so they decided to continue the flight.

The flight crew pushed the engine throttle levers to the highest position to increase thrust. As the aircraft approached the end of the runway, with approximately 300 ft (91 m) remaining, the pilot decided to pitch up the nose and take off."
