A couple of things, as tempting as it is to count all the UK/english countries, its generally presumed (accept for sporting events) that they are all just one country... I notice several people have also counted China/Hong Kong/Macau.. Not 100% sure about Macau but at least since 2000 or so aren't they all part of China although they may have autonomous status? Same with multiple Emirates etc.. And also not sure if Pal. Territories count just yet either?? :p

Anyway, each to their own and not wanting to rain on people's parade or be party poopers but just for standardisation and accuracy...

Couple of things, for me personally I usually only count countries i have stayed in at least over night apart from the Vatican City as i don't think that is really an option (although almost everything else seems to be on sale there) so even though I have travelled across countries to get to other ones if I didn't get out and at least experience it for a bit or stay over night let alone just sit in an airport i don't count it...

And for those who think they are untravelled and a long way to go and how will they fit it in, in the last 4 years when i suddenly had much more freedom to indulge my love of travel and see the world i have managed to visit 27 of my 37 which is not a bad rate... And all countries visited have been personally paid for, no work travel which i think also an achievement...

Some long service leave didn't hurt and i bought more leave this year but helps how you like to travel, in 2008 I did a 6 week sweep through Europe, 2009 3 week/6 country trip round Asia, 2010 6 week sweep through North Africa/Europe and this year a biggy 2.5 months RTW through 15 countries trip... Its just a different way of travelling, which doesn't suit everyone, not week long stays in each country and lying by the pool relaxing but a sampling of some of the best, most interesting places in each... But depending on how you plan and like to travel its eminently doable, as i said 13 more countries in the next 2 years is not out of the question...

After 50 countries it will start to get into the realms of how many more countries do I really want to visit as its not visiting countries for the sake of it and there are plenty I wouldn't touch with a barge pole if it wasn't for work reasons and work paying, which is not likely...

Never thought to actually do a count so here it is:

1. Australia
2. New Zealand
3. Fiji

4. Thailand
5. Cambodia
6. Laos
7. Vietnam
8. Myanmar
9. Malaysia
10. Singapore
11. Indonesia
12. Hong Kong (before independence)
13. China
14. Japan
15. Bhutan

16. Tanzania
17. Zambia
18. Botswana
19. South Africa

20. United Arab Emirates

21. England
22. Ireland
23. Scotland
24. Wales

25. USA
26. Mexico
27. Belize
28. Guatemala
29. Honduras
30. Nicaragua
31. Panama
32. El Salvador
33. Costa Rica

34. Bolivia
35. Paraguay
36. Uruguay
37. Argentina
38. Chile
39. Peru

40. Cuba
41. The Bahamas

Plus India and Kenya which I have only ever touched the tarmac in without even getting off the plane! And Brazil which I was just on a bus going through for half an hour.

Didn't realise it was so many and pretty good being only 26 and all of it holiday travel and also never having been to mainland Europe.

Here my count. 31 in 34 years, not bad. Will hopefully add one more before the end of this year. I've also transitted through Ireland, Kuwait and Oman, but can't count them. Also, can I count Christania as an independent location? The count in brackets is approximately how many times I've been to a particular country.

Interestingly, my son has been to 10 countries in his 3 years.

I suggest we establish some form of ground rules here...how about the following:
  • Only count current countries e.g. West & East Germany count as one not two countries....the USSR is no longer so Russia & the Ukraine now count as two even if you visited prior to the split.
  • The UK is counted one country...otherwise you could go on forever with places like Jersey , Isle of Man etc.
  • Principalities such as the Vatican City, Monaco should be counted but self proclaimed area's such as Christiania (in Denmark) should not.
  • Having an hour or two stopover at an airport should not count...you need to enter the country (go through imigration or get out of your car and wander around a bit!)
  • Hong Kong and Macau are now part of China both SAR's so they both probably should count just as China.
  • The French make it a bit difficult with some territories such as Tahiti ,New Caledonia, Reunion etc which are still technically part of France - so probably should just be counted as France...this may be open for debate?
I will revise my list...any other thoughts?

I cannot resist a lawyer's nitpick - neither Jersey nor the Isle of Man are part of the United Kingdom.

Maybe an easy rule would be an entity counts as a separate country if it has a vote in the UN General Assembly.

Lets keep it simple therefore I would suggest we include in the U.K. it's three Crown Dependencies(Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man) and fourteen overseas territories...

The Overseas Territories are:

A modest 26 (not including Australia) for me In order:

Australia (1972)
US (1980)
Mexico (1980)
Canada (1980)
UK (1986)
France (1986)
Belgium (1986)
Netherlands (1986)
Germany (1986)
Switzerland (1986)
Hong Kong (1986)
China (1989)
Thailand (1998)
Spain (1998)

Portugal (1998)
Austria (1998)
Hungary (1998)
Czech Republic (1998)
Denmark (1998)
Sweden (1998)
Finland (1998)
Luxembourg (1998)
Italy (1998)
Vatican City (1998)
Greece (1998)

Turkey (1998)
Singapore(2011)

Looking back at this list I'm shocked that it took me 13 years to add one country despite travelling a lot in that time. I've also transited NZ, India, Japan, UAE but not left the airport.
