Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I've long browsed this forum as flying has been part of my MO since I got my "BEA Junior Jet Club" book way back in 1971 (aged 4) as Mum & Dad shambles dragged me and my 2 younger sisters off to live in Budapest following the old man's career. Loads of travel as a kid and then a six year stint as an Air traffic controller (in da RAAF) meant that I got to do most things (leagal and otherwise) whilst in the air, so it was a natural progression to take a sales & mareting gig that had a fair bit of travel involved.

Anyway, I digress. A few weeks back, I was starting to look at plans for my once every year or so, "personal" trip to Europe for me & SWMBO, and realised that come end of July I may just be able to work an itinerary that pops me up a notch to QP. Aside from reading around here a lot of stuff from disgruntled QP members, I thought bugger it, might as well see how the other half live if it's simply a matter of a slightly longer journey than my usual QF 30/29 and a bit of creative ASA sector by sector booking.

After a final 2 hour sesh today of juggling two laptops and countless permutations and combinations, I've finally locked in our trip and with a NZ trip due in the next week or two, I should just about get to QP instead of what was shaping up to barely managing to retain QG (a lot more video conferences instead of meetings lately :( )

Sincere thanks to you lot for the easy to understand tips and other info on here - it made me realise that there are many other ways to boost your SC earn and mix things up a bit for a change.

I gave up on the JQ to SIN idea after their "business max" idea seems to have taken a lot of SC vs $$ value away, and have bit the bullet with ASA business class QF to SIN (and back) and a AY J class return to LHR. I've only ever done London-Helsinki with AY (Y class) so am looking forward to seeing how their J stacks up. All told, I've parted with circa $6.5K (after tax ;) ) and 120,000 points. Also the added bonus  that I've had to book Mrs Shambles on a Y ticket for one of the shorter sectors. (she can always share my bed seat thingy)

So all that's left to do is book a 3 day side trip Sigapore to KL for some shoppping & eating (was thinking JQ asia seems to be pretty cheap and frequent?), a BA return LHR to Toulouse to talk about how great Aussie vino is, with some relos in France for a day or two, and some freebie accomodation with PC points for the few nights where we can't bludge of friends and family.

I'll be back at work for a holiday after those two weeks!

Thanks again

Enjoy the trip, the complaints about the QP mainly relate to two things, one they are overcrowed (esp golden triangle, during peak times), two they are very lacking in food compared to what they used to be, however these complaints relate to the domestic QP's only.

When flying international it's a whole different game as your not actually using the QP, your placed into the JLounge. I've seen them full, but I've always been able to find a seat (and the terminal outside was always more busy) plus the food on offer is much better.

About the only down side with the International JLounges is it's a self serve bar, but provided you know how to make the drink you want, that's not a problem.

Don't forget the best way to say thank you for AFF even existing is to buy a silver or gold membership ;)

I too started off knowing sfa about SC's and the like. I was PS for 6 or 7 years, then went to WP in 6 months after learning about this place.

A great resource:)

I think there are three different ways to say thanks for info learnt here:

- Stick around, post to threads and give others the benefit of your learnings.
- Attend one of the AFF catch-ups, or say Hi to someone from AFF when you're in the same lounge/on the flight. (This is a community remember!).
- Gold/Silver membership to help with site running costs.

I think by QP you mean Qantas Platinum, yeah? They call it WP around here (for w**ker platinum) and SG (scum gold). The thread with all the abbreviations is here.http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ions/abbreviations-and-explanations-5056.html :)

Thanks Katie - I am a newb so the pointers much appreciated. You are indeed perceptive as I was taking QF Platinum as being QP. I'm slowly adding AFF'ish to my language CV. :D

Good to see I am aiming to ascend from the scum layer to attain holy wanker status - giddy up!
