I tried to go to the frequentflyer.com.au website today, but it automatically redirects me to the Emirates webpage. I know the name has changed which is fine, but I still think its a little bit unfair to force me to their home page against my will

This happened to me today as well. I thought I must have accidentally clicked something to take me there. Strange that they've picked up the address.

According to whois it’s still owned by the site, so I guess it’s on rent now, should be a welcome income boost to the site.

This does annoy me somewhat. When admin announced that the name was changing, he assured us that it was 'to more accurately reflect the name of the site' and that it had not been sold.

The fact it's now re-directing, IMHO, stinks. It's selling out.

It's just my 2c, but I still dislike what's been done. Everyone of course is welcome to their own opinion.

Why are we making the change?
We think australianfrequentflyer.com.au better reflects the nature of our community, which is called “The Australian Frequent Flyer” and usually referred to as “AFF”.

There was a thread on it somewhere where we had told it had not been sold, but I can't for the life of me find it :S

Issue for me is, if it's being sold to use for marketing, tell us. I do pay for my membership here, and it would have been nice to know. Agreed it's admin's site and he can do what he likes, but it would be good if he was up front about it.

Hence my point about being up-front. I hope it makes admin lots of cash so this site can go on, but just tell us 'oh we're selling it/renting it to make cash'.

I recall there was a thread about selling it and he was open to offers, so we knew it was coming, but it still looks to be registered to him, so I don’t think it’s been sold.

It was fairly obvious the name change was for commercial reasons, no great surprise there.

Good luck to admin imo. I'm not a paying member and frankly don't intend to be - I've never understood why a forum that should cost peanuts to run costs so much to join. I wouldn't mind dropping the odd donation in but an annual subscription is a bit rich.

I don't have a problem with them making money out of a wise choice of domain names however!

I've often contemplated running forums for various things over the years. When it came down to dollars and cents, there just wasn't enough benefit in it. It is expensive

It's obviously possible to spend as much as you want on such things, but I run a forum and a) the software is free (phpBB), and b) the hosting (in the US) is about $15 / month for a virtual server with unlimited storage / bandwidth. If admin is paying much more than $20 - $30/month to keep this system running he's crazy :mrgreen:
