It's obviously possible to spend as much as you want on such things, but I run a forum and a) the software is free (phpBB), and b) the hosting (in the US) is about $15 / month for a virtual server with unlimited storage / bandwidth. If admin is paying much more than $20 - $30/month to keep this system running he's crazy

I'm sure if you're running a small forum for your local Gaming Clan with 50 users total of whom any 5 are online at any point in time, an overseas VPS with 'unlimited bandwidth' but limited CPU capacity may do the job.

A, highly visible, public forum on a very mainstream topic that regularly has over 100 concurrent users is another kettle of fish entirely :)

On the subject of the sale of frequentflyer.com.au, I also am surprised at the lack of bids so far. At the current price I'm almost tempted to make an offer myself as their is definitely the scope to make use of the domain as a wider ranging community resource.

Wouldn't know what a gaming clan was, sorry - this is a support forum for a commercial product.

A Gaming Clan is a group of people all interested in the same game who form a team to play against other clans. Quite often they'll setup a forum in the manner you describe to be able to communicate between members and announce upcoming games, updates to software etc.

My point was more that it's something that's fairly niche and not likely to have the 203 concurrent users who were on AFF as I posted that reply last night.

Horses for courses I guess :)

Then I must be VERY VERY crazy to run dedicated hardware in an Australian Data Cente, with a professional Server Administrator. :)

Good on you Admin!
The number of doggy unlimited server BS* in the states ! You have chosen an Australian host - which is by no means cheap!

Qantas have never owned the domain frequentflyer.com.au. Nor do they have a trademark (in any category) on "Frequent Flyer".

I do remember many years back one of their promos seemed to think that it was a QF domain, as it was asking customers to visit www.frequentflyer.com.au and being shown on every flight .

Why was this post deleted? IIRC there was nothing inflammatory nor inappropriate about this post. Merely highlighted that it would be extremely difficult for any third party to just claim the domain name and use for unrelated purposes

I suggest you ask the poster. He deleted it
