New cringeworthy QF John Travolta safety video

Apparently the latest Air New Zealand All Blacks-enhanced safety video has been quashed because of a 'gay scene'. Wow.

Here's the YouTube video (including the three second 'gay scene') and the article about its removal.

Personally, I'm with NZ. In fact, perhaps watch the video first and try to spot the alleged 'gay scene'. A different approach to the safety videos may well be what's needed and it seems NZ are doing their best on this front.

That’s ludicrous, I fail to see how that scene would lead to gay male suicides, and don’t see anything wrong with it myself. It’s light hearted and obviously the rugby player isn’t going to give a male flight attendant a kiss.

I don't see anything wrong with that scene either - thought it was quite funny.

However regardless if you disagree or agree with this his decision to complain, that means at some point during the demonstration his thought has gone from paying attention to his safety, to that's outrageous, I need to complain and probably didn't pay attention to the rest of the video. Should something of happened, would he have been prepared?

Is that his own fault - I don't think so.

We all get distracted by different things - when it comes to our safety onboard - the less distractions, the better.

Saw the new John Travolta safety video on the 767-338 this afternoon; it was a bit of a shock not to hear, Hello Again.

The start from John Travolta wasn't too bad, I thought it was good.

I am sure it got most peoples attention, and the safety demonstration isn't ended with John Travolta so I actually need to go flying again, or maybe check youtube.

Haven't seen the new vid yet, but sounds like with the seat belt thing they are copying Virgin America.

They don't have a video, but in the pre-recorded safety voice over they say "for the point zero zero zero zero zero one percent of you that don't know how to use a seat belt, you do it up by ... bla bla"

Humorous for those who do know how, but condenscending for those that don't!

Saw the new John Travolta safety video on the 767-338 this afternoon; it was a bit of a shock not to hear, Hello Again.

Or didn't see it on a horribly out of focus washed out projector screen that passes for entertainment on a 767

Surely there must be a simple cheap mod to get rid of the projector and rig up a thin LED TV (40" are under 15kg) and have to be less power intensive than the projector.

Hello Again was at least better than the previous version. To summarise, then provide detail.

No simple cheap tv mod, because if you want to add something new and electrical to an aircraft, it has to go through significant testing and certification, which equals $$.

Stuck with the useless 1980 TVs I am afraid.

Would the vibrations from a hard landing be detrimental to such a panel? I wouldn’t imagine the amount of power it uses an issue though, so long as it was less than the original, not more. Also LCD’s give off a bit of heat. I know a projector does too, but different locations, and as above, would all need to be certified.

I think you have plasma screens in mind. LCD give off very little heat. Most likley nothing has been updated because QF thought they were getting rid of the 767, unfortunately RR stuffed up many of their plans.

I did cringe a little today when I saw it (strangely it was only on my 738 flight and not my 763 flight).

The seatbelt bit does seem patronising, but the rest is pretty stock standard.

Don't really like it - but don't also hate it.

well past efforts havent seemed to work...maybe being patronising will ACTUALLY GET PEOPLE TO FASTEN THEIR SEATBELTS WHEN REQUIRED!!! i notice every day i fly that it is beyond some peoples capabilities to perform this simple task without being 'prompted' to!!

I too heard the JT demo on Wed on QF405 to MEL, but the projectors on VH-OGU were stuffed, so there were no accompanying visuals seeing as that ac doesn't have ceiling or bulkhead mounted monitors... A couple of the crew were visibly surpised to hear the American accent fill the cabin instead of Capt Hello Again. (Actually, that was the only emotion I saw at all from any of the crew through the whole flight. They were definitely one of the more sour QF crews I've come across!!):-|

Like others, I agree the "witty" seatbelt routine seems all a bit JQ.

I wonder how long it'll last.....

On the plus side, they seem to have fixed some of the wording:

Possibly, but The Team is mentioned far too many times for my liking. It just feels to me like it's an attempt to 'Virgin-ise' QF to be 'hip and cool' whilst failing miserably
