The Operational Upgrade Thread

Would need to look at my spreadsheet to see how many QF flights I've been on - but am also tracking a grand total of 0 upgrades.

Around 250 QF flights since Jan 2001 here (after checking my spreadsheet). 1 accidental bump-up to F from J (after I'd upgraded to J with points and ladies hubby was bumped to F and they wanted to sit together so we swapped, much to my delight). 1 accidental op-up PER-MEL on a 743 after asking for an ODU and just being told 'leave it with us' and was only QPPS. When boarding, was handed a J BP for upper deck (My flight had been cancelled and I was shifted to that flight).

Only real op ups to date happened late last year in the silly season. SYD-SFO from Y to Y+ in J seats and ADL-MEL from Y to J (row 4 to row 3!). Was the 28th December on a very very full flight, beep at gate.

One of my friends got an op-up on his first flight as a NB, but that was 10 years ago also. I'm not expecting any more in a long time after 2 in 2 months:)

127 QF flights since the start of 2006 for me (includes Qantas, Jetconnect and QantasLink). Coming up to 2 years as a WP.

Almost all of them that are cash paid are Red e-Deals, often the lowest bucket.

Of those, 5 of them were op-ups - 4 domestic and 1 Trans-Tasman. 1 half-upgrade, which doesn't count (i.e. Y+ seating but Y service). All op-ups awarded to me when I was a WP - never when I was any other status.

The 4 op-ups occurred during my mad May run last year (too many QF flights within a week), which I believe might have temporarily "inflated" my value to QF and hence pushed me a bit higher than some of the other WPs on the op-up preference list. Either that or I flew flights with not many WPs but still full selling cabins (seems unlikely, but there you go).

No idea how the latest op-up (Trans-Tasman from N class) was calculated, and that op-up was given at check-in, not a gate beep!

The longevity argument doesn't work - I've been a QFF member since 1994. You actually need to be "valuable" to QF; being "valuable" for a long time most probably helps.

TOTAL UPGRADES ; ZIP, ZERO, NADA.

Go QF.

I know that it's not alot compared to come people on this board, but still, something would have been nice for 10 years loyalty.
Don't give up. Just when you least expect it the op-up will happen.

You get 5000 points for every 450 SC. I think that's getting something for loyalty
It was much better when they gave out Upgrade Credits (UC's). From memory it was only 3 UC's for a one-way upgade to SIN/BKK/HKG. Never got the chance as I had only ever accumulated 1 UC before the changes in 2005. :(

So my op-ratio looks good compared to some of the people on this site. ;)

I got upgraded on QF 458 between MEL SYD yesterday - 3rd time this calendar year.

Now the bad news....

Was supposed to depart at 1800 - we boarded at 1944 - didn't take off till 2030 and arrived at 2151 (scheduled arrival 1925).

We had no dinner on the aircraft either only bar service.

Delay due to lightning and thunderstorms over Melbourne.

Don't forget, on some QantasLink flights, there is only 1 class, whY. But, there are different whY tickets, for SC earning.

All my tickets are Red eDeals too, since l'm paying.
My Golden Rule.
1) Arrive at airport early, no matter the departure time.

With that simple sule, l haven't missed a QF flight, ever and haven't seen the need to buy more expensive flexible tickets.

The Op-Up thread

I got an upgrade (opup) from K to J on QF467 (A332) between Sydney and Melbourne. 4th this calendar year.

Two only out of about of 75 flights... and in Oct of last year:

1. Y to Y+ when Mrs Paddy and I were upgraded an hour into the flight (SYD-LAX QF107) after a number of AVODs had failed - I was a mere SG then so pleasant surprise.

2. Y to Y+ seating (Y food) from JFK-SYD

Both greatly appreciated

Paddy

You're doing something right, YQY. Don't stop :D

Thanks - will do!

I can't say i was impressed with the A332 domestic QF J Seats & IFE.... they are basically Jet* J seats without leather. Service and F&B was excellent.

Good news - i had seat 2D allocated which had excellent leg room (ie no seat ahead of it) - same as Jet* J arrangement.

Bad news - Y on A332 domestic gets a cut down version of Q entertainment ie a selection of channels - J gets main screen only!!!! Go figure

That would mean A332 J is Millennium seating, not Skybed. In any case, still a better seat than in Y for a long hop, although for a short hop as you had, it's a lot more subdued effect.

My first op-up in years.

ADL-SYD after my online check-in boarding pass beeped red at the gate.

After much mucking around I was allocated a new Y seat and was the last to board. As the door was closed one of the cabin crew came and gave me a new seat allocation in J.

Yippie!!!

1st ever op-up on SYD-MEL on QF409. Even better A332 Int (ie SkyBed I)

My only other op-ups have been a lunchtime weekday SYD-BNE (2 others I was travelling with also got bumped) and a Sun eve SYD-DRW.

Second ever SYD-MEL op-up on a Boeing 767 on Sun night.
Again at gate.

For the Menu Aficionados:
Beef Anise with rice and vegetables
Prosciutto salad with artichoke and sun-dried tomatoes
Hewitson Ned & Henry's 2008 Shiraz (Barossa) - A$25 winefront.com.au
Juniper Crossing 2009 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc (Margaret River)

Another surprise earlier this evening (sorry docJames) with my 2nd op-up of the year for BNE-SYD flight shortly. Flight looks wide open in business (J9) and only 3 economy seats available.

I'm posting this from the BNE D J Lounge.

QF509 this morning - had selected seat 24D at around T-70; mobile check-in at around T-20.

Decided to get a real BP at the J Lounge desk so accepted the offer to be checked in by the J Lounge attendant.

She handed me my cardboard BP and asked, "Is...ummm...1F alright with you?"

My reply, "Well, I was originally in 24D...yes, I think that'll be just fine." :) Cue laughter.

No idea about loads - seatcounter shows flight as completely zeroed out, but checking this close to departure that probably means diddly squat in context. When I checked OLCI (full desktop version) yesterday, I could still select 23DK and almost any seat in row 24 and 25 (bar about two per row). Might have a look once on board, but then again, maybe I won't.

EDIT: Flight must have been fairly full; didn't go fully exploring, but from seat 1F looking back, there was not a free seat to be seen.

At least I was row 9 (But seat F - I normally prefer aisle)

thanks for guesting me to the J lounge. Good to catch up. Did your flight leave on time?

I fly 1-2 times a month, purely domestic and mainly ADL-PER. No I'm not a CUB but there are certainly plenty on the flights.

For some reason I've been upgraded in both directions 2 out of the last 3 times I've flown this route. Never before even though the return flight is full most of the time. Just scraped in to become a WP for the first time ever in Sep, as have never really done a lot of flying before. The only other upgrade I've ever had was SYD-ADL just after I reached WP.

Go figure.

6th Op-Up this calendar year (5 domestic + 1 international).

I booked myself from SYD-AKL via MEL (QF49 is sold out!) on Sunday and to my surprise I was allocated seat 1C on the MEL-AKL leg (QF 133).
