Bugger that for a joke; I’m stopping in the AKL Pullman. If you’re gonna do DSCs, you need to do it in style…
That's not a bad way to do it. I would 100% stay somewhere nice for a status run, but for mine I will get in after midnight and fly out at 6am. Really can't justify staying somewhere nice for ~3 hours.

We don't have the leave or funds to play the status run game this year, but some flights that needed booking anyway and careful timing may get us both to Silver. Need to figure out a Points Club strategy I think- it seems difficult to make best use of a large number of points without status, but we don't earn status credits when most of our flying is rewards bookings.

Anyone kept a track of how much fares have increased for this DSC promotion?
I had my eye on a MEL SCL flight that’s jumped just over $1800 for the same flights. I’ll be qualified for platinum anyway so don’t care (I was toying with going P1 but 🤷‍♂️) - I’ll wait for a sale and save my cash.
I'm sitting this one out, although I'm feeling conflicted doing so.

I've retained Platinum this year so I have status through to the end of July 2027. I've opted against spending my own money to push for P1, given my business travel has dropped off significantly (I've yet to board a plane this year...) and I have no personal travel plans.

Spending $8.5k of my own money to become P1 for the benefit of 'being' P1 through to the end of July 2027 and then dropping down to Platinum for August 2027 to July 2028, isn't worth the hit to my savings when I'm flying significantly less than I used to.
You’re in my head lol

Is this another fight club like situation (yes or no will do 😎)

I get that it’s QF metal but from OP’s post it’s, booked and ticketed by AA, so not on 81- stock. So not a QF CR that would be eligible for points club SCs.
It's not even a glitch, ticket stock doesn't matter, marketed=code, operated=metal. Even retro-claims have been 100% successful (since it's become near impossible to change the FF# on 125- bookings).

If you can easily get there, then do so.

But don’t go out of your way for Silver. Even though you get access to award seats on QF 26 days earlier than Bronze, you’re still competing for seats after Gold and higher have had them available for a few weeks before Silver do.

In addition, the increased access is only really relevant to Qantas award seats (and there aren’t that many of those anyway, even to Silver and higher) and Emirates first award seats. So bear this in mind when you consider whether it is worthwhile.

Other routes I'm booking on top of the DSC flights in case people want ideas other than Qantas:

CGK - FRA Qatar J return $3100, yields 320 SCs - will make two of these trips = 640 SCs. Not a status run as such but if planning a Euro trip anyway...

DPS - KUL - BKK Malaysian airlines J return $1100, yields 240 SCs

Does anyone know if the double status credit promotion applies for trips originating outside of Australia for travel TO Australia on Qantas metal?

Yes they are. No restriction on to, from or within Australia.

Edit: @DejaBrew maybe another one to add to the bingo card!

I did the overnight AKL airport last year November.

You have to wait landside until 4:30am because that’s when immigration opens.

It’s a bit of a drag but doable - at least McDonals is open 24 hours.

I was doing some filing today and thought Id share an interesting data point. A DSC movie ticket purchased in:
  • 2020 for a session in 2021 cost $150.24 - this film no longer screens
  • 2024 (or 2025) for a session in 2025 (or 2026) cost $253.97 - a popular classic
But a movie ticket purchased this week for same popular classic has a minimum investment of $303. Its not just inflation because CPI is not 19%.

I had a strange experience for the previous movie festival. I had purchased a ticket for an Australian movie, but couldn't attend, so I call to change to go to an international blockbuster movie instead, which also happen to be on sale. I was told I couldn't get the online price, and was told online pricing is only for new ticket reservation. So I had to purchase a slightly more expensive ticket. I felt short changed, cause my ticket was flexible with no change fees. Anyway. Anyone with similar experience?

Changes have restrictions needing to be for a more expensive ticket i.e not a cheapo Tuesday but a VMAX Saturday night, but if you cancel the original booking and opt for a credit, that credit voucher can then be used on any movie even an international blockbuster provided it is watched during the promo period.

it is all in the method used to cancel the original screening, a change is never as good as a credit. A cash refund always costs you.

If you are going to NZ I strongly encourage you to look at buying AUS-NZ and NZ-AUS as separate PNRs.

Whilst it may not always be the case, today my DUD-AKL-MEL leg was ~AU$300 cheaper purchased on QF NZ site, than it was going to be for the exact same flights if purchased on the QF AU site by adding to same PNR as my MEL-SYD-CHC-DUD leg. Seems there is currently a better Sale on the NZ site to encourage the kiwis not to fly Air NZ.

Best price for DUD-AKL-MEL on QF AU was AU$980 (DUD-AKL is QF code share on Air NZ in whY, with AKL-MEL in J on QF, so I will only get DSC on the AKL-MEL leg) but on QF NZ same flight was NZ$700.

I was today years old when I learned that neither Air NZ no Jetstar offer J on NZ domestic flights :(
That is a very interesting tip. NZ status runs in my view, as a frequent visitor to Auckland anyway,, are way cheaper than going anywhere else in business. Yesterday I was looking at SYD-HND in April I think and the cheapest ONE way in economy to Japan was $2,300, which is insane as you would probably do a return in economy for half that price. Trouble is it was only flex fares left, which are considerably over priced always (corporates no doubt get a discounted rate).

You don't offer discount tickets for premiers.
