How to claim HK departure tax from Classic Reward ticket

Hi everyone,

I recently redeemed a classic reward ticket with Qantas points, and I noticed an issue with the tax breakdown on the final e-ticket. According to the Hong Kong government’s new platform for claiming departure tax, the ticket must show a detailed breakdown of the tax categories (such as YQ, WY, YR, etc.), and the tax code should include “HK” for the claim to be valid.

Before the ticket was issued, I could see the tax breakdown clearly, but the final e-ticket only lists the total amount without any detailed breakdown of the individual tax components. Given that the T&Cs specifically mention the requirement for tax breakdown, I’m concerned that this could affect my ability to claim the departure tax.

Has anyone had a similar experience with Qantas? Is there a way to request them to reissue the ticket with the tax breakdown details? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

What airline is your flight with? Sometimes you can request a ticket copy via other airlines' MMB that has clearer better breakdown of the fees paid than the QF one.

It’s Qantas flight, the ticket only shows the total tax without any breakdown details.

In that case, your best bet is probably to contact QF and see what they can do.

I've had a look back at past e-tickets and none issued by QF have a breakdown of the total taxes/fees paid. I'd be doubtful as to whether the system would allow an agent to issue an e-ticket formatted with this detail included - perhaps if you got someone competent in Hobart?

Failing that, I'd request written confirmation of the tax component breakdown, and submit it along with the e-ticket.

Didn't realise this still worked for tickets without an AY booking on them, but just tried and worked a treat. Problem solved!

Slightly OT: has anyone managed to actually receive a refund to their Aussie debit/credit card? I've put in my requests over a month ago which have been approved but it is still showing "refund pending" and no payment received yet.

The FAQs say three weeks. Maybe they’re having teething problems.

What is this HK departure tax claim? Ill be flying out from HK in January
Basically separate tickets, where you have paid the full HK departure tax on the second ticket ex HKG, currently HKD200, so not insubstantial.

However, you cannot have cleared HK immigration, so if you have to go through and collect your bags, you aren’t supposed to claim. Under the previous model you had to exit landslide to go to one of the counters to claim the tax.

You can now claim as a passenger who departs by air the day of, or the day after, arrival by air even if you clear the border (if you have paid the tax on booking).
With effect from 1 October 2025, the scope of exemption will be expanded to include:
  • Passengers who arrive at and depart from Hong Kong by air on the following calendar day; and
  • Passengers arriving by land or sea and departing by aircraft on the same day or on the following day, except those who have left Hong Kong by land or sea on the day or the preceding day of their departure flights.

Worth trying… to me the eligibility seems a bit ambiguous…

The fully expanded bullets read:

  1. passengers under 12 years of age
  2. direct transit passengers / connecting airside transfer passengers who do not pass through arrival immigration control
  3. passengers who arrive and depart Hong Kong by air on the same or following calendar day
  4. passengers who arrive Hong Kong by land or sea, and depart from Hong Kong by air on the same or following calendar day (without exiting Hong Kong through immigration control by land or sea on the day or the preceding day of their departure flights)
  5. passengers arriving via the SkyPier Terminal cross-boundary ferry or coach and staying within the restricted area until departure by air
2, 4, and 5 all mention that you cannot exit Hong Kong through immigration control, or must stay in the restricted area.

It doesn’t make sense that you can do so in 2, when all the others say ‘you can’t’. Otherwise you wouldn’t need those other bullets?

But… worth trying anyway to see if a claim is paid!

I read that as an OR llist with each designated criteria exclusive to each other ... just one of those needs to be true to be eligible.

So, 3 it is ...
