My thoughts on Neldner Road 'The Silesian' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 which is for secret sale on
Wines Direct for $35 a bottle (down from make believe $150). Sharing for those considering, not to be told by Dr Ralph I am posting in the wrong section!
From the way it was described, I was expecting an oak-driven, full-bodied style that would benefit from a few years in the cellar. Instead, I found a 'ready for now' wine with soft tannins and a beautiful mouthfeel, with little oak influence - likely the result of extended maturation in second-fill barrels (which, if they’ve already seen two years with Powell’s Kraehe Shiraz, are effectively third-fill).
The perfume was attractive but subtle - I had to search for it. The fruit is understated and elegant, but feels close to its peak. I wouldn’t recommend extended cellaring.
For $35 the value is there if you compare it to what you get at BWS or DM for this price. But for those of us bargain hunters chasing $60–$80 wines at $35–$50, I would look elsewhere, especially if you like 30-50% new oak in your reds and plan to cellar them for a few years.
Keen to hear what you guys think also.
