Are you sure it was the same fare? The old 25 on CBR-MEL would have been a Flex fare. 13 under the new system works out to around $156 - that's more like Choice fare pricing, not Flex.
It’s for work, all fares were booked flex

I'm trialing a new technique. Book J well in advance, this gives me security that'll have a comfortable seat and flexibility. Night before flying, when I know definitely I'll be travelling, check the flight. If it's obviously lightly booked, book Choice and select a front row seat with no-one in the middle. Cancel J flight. If flight's looking full, stick with Plan A.
Obviously not good for accumulating SC's but works financially. Now it's purely $ based, there's no incentive to book Flex, if you're definitely travelling, so the mix of J and Choice will return similar SC's to consistently booking Flex.

How does it compare in terms of fares though? last minute v advance? I was getting $349 one ways for SYD-MEL, the price of the cheapest economy fare far exceeded that by the day of travel (although I was on peak flights).

I highly doubt the day before departure there'll be 2 row 3 seats available. 1 for you 1 next to you for 'comfort'.

And year price day before far from cheap, even choice.

Obviously, it depends on loading. Depending where you are flying and when you are flying. I should qualify my comment to say that I've only trialed it once so far. Adelaide to Sydney in the middle of the day. Banked about $400 and had a comfortable trip. If the flight's lightly booked, the prices don't go up.
If there are few premium flyers travelling, the front rows are often empty. I've had an entire row 3 to myself before now. I've also been the only person in the business cabin on multiple occasions.

Seem to have made a rookie error today. I booked the return leg of a MEL-SYD-MEL on VA however my outbound was on QF, both flights on the same PNR through work TA. Turns out there's a separate (punitive) status and points earn table, which does not follow the new SC/$ calc...

Is this new?? I've been shortchanged 15 SC and 3k points for a single flight based on this horrible earn rate.

I can't fathom why this is even a thing, doesn't make sense to me.

How many did you get? What were you expecting?

Received 570 points and 15 SC for a $370 flight. I'm SG so should have received 3237 points and 31 SC under the new rules...
Booked a LITE fare at 1 SC per $24 spend.
Needed a Choice fare for 30SC on that flight.

Lite fares must not give thee status extra velocity points.

Correct:
2: Tier Bonus Points refers to the additional number of Points (beyond the Base Points) that can be earned by a Silver, Gold or Platinum member when flying on all fare types excluding Lite with Virgin Australia

Correct:

Nothing to do with a Lite fare. Booked choice.

So your employer booked a QF flight (outbound) and you expected or as the Virgin table states you should earn SC & VFF points?

I'm little confused.

QF outbound, get zero VFF anything, get QF earnings if QF number in booking.

Return leg received earn based on Lite fare, but you had Choice fare booked.

Got me in knots.

I was confused too. I'm not querying the QF earn, that was fine and as normal. What happened is the VA flight credited as per a separate earn table rather than the new 12 SC/$ which I personally has no idea about.

I'm wondering if this is really intended to capture a VA to UA/SQ connection sold by VA, where the costs can't be clearly segregated so they need to credit by miles flown still and not the new $ spend.
