The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

No doubt you all know better, but what I was referring to (along with my knowledge of advance bookings) was:

Mr Barr on Tuesday said the ACT government did not anticipate it would need to allow fully vaccinated Canberrans different freedoms, because the difference between 70 and 80 per cent vaccination coverage in the territory would be about five days.

I'd ask him the same question then.

Looking at the COVID LIVE data for ACT, it projects it will be 12 days between 70% (attained on 7 Sep) and 80% (19 Sep) on first jabs.
For second jabs, it shows 60% on 25 Sep, 70% on 09 Oct (+14 days) and 80% on 23 Oct (+ another 14 days). I guess it could speed up somewhat, and the smaller population means more impact in that regard... presuming the delivery channels are available

What is odd about Barr's statements in that article is he seems to think once we get to 80% freedoms apply to all. Gladys was very clear at 70% and 80% milestones the freedoms only apply to the fully vaccinated (and the ineligible i.e. under 12s).

I think that is due to him not being pro vaxx passport, which is something I applaud. As I said earlier, on privacy he is good, on freedoms, not so much.

If vax passport (and exemptions) are properly integrated into the Service NSW app, Check-In CBR app etc, then it simply displays an extra tick, without giving venues your private info. Not much different than showing ID to get into a licensed venue.

right, but you are talking about a medical apartheid, a two-tier society.

I think we are going to fly past 80%, I dont want a gun put to peoples heads saying "take the drug or be edged out of society"

Not really, people couldnt change the colour of their skin under apartheid, but they can choose to get vaccinated with a free vaccine (and exemptions will be available for the minuscule number of people of people who genuinely cant get jabbed for medical reasons).

I have no problem with limiting access to certain venues, events and workplaces to only the fully vaccinated and exempt.

We can probably drop the check-in bit of the app, but the need to show vax certificate for entry is not imo problematic ongoing.

Vax stats out - unexpected surge in NSW with 175,636 - powering to 49.6% second jabs. I think this is the record daily number of doses - covidlive has 175,636 on 09 April 21 but I think that was a data catch up thing.

First jabs up to 80.7%, slowing but seems to be steady at around 40K per weekday.

National record too at 389,182 doses.

while they are incredibly safe, they are not risk free, telling people they have to spin the one in a million wheel or be excluded. personally i'm just not comfortable with it

We take many more risks each day just going about our normal lives. There is at least one* death a day on the roads so should we insist everyone works from home?

SIL who works in an Adelaide hub says numbers have soared this week. The one issue they are finding is that teenagers take much more time as they are more nervous of the process, and not what is in the needle. And many more teens feeling unwell afterwards, but only because that is what teens in groups will do. They are only doing AZ second doses now as everyone has moved on to Pfizer.

Don't be so hyperbolic, this is a public health measure akin to forcing smokers into the cage of shame when they want to engage in practices that are harmful to those around them.

Unvaxxed people will still be able to engage in activities that don't put everyone else at risk - employees, business owners, the more sensible majority of the general public.

Except that cohort was supposed to be reported separately, as doesn't count towards the 70 and 80% targets.

Yep, seems to be a decision by covidlive - official report had NSW at 118,123 doses today.

They really should show both. The % at the top is still 16+ at least.

You are getting the insistence backwards.
You can choose to drive but not on highways, and access everything in the country.
You can choose to only take public transport, and access everything in the country.
In your analogy you would force people to drive every 6 months or be excluded from society even if they were afraid of doing so?

I dont consider myself at risk from the unvaccinated, thats why i took the vaccine.

We should go past 70% first dose and 45% fully vaccinated for 16+ when today's numbers are released tomorrow on the national average and also go past 85% first dose for 50+ at the same time.

Every age group 70-74 and up except 95+ has gone past 70% fully vaccinated. 95+ may reach that as soon as when today's numbers are released tomorrow.

75-79 is the first age group to reach 75% fully vaccinated.

Every age group 16-19 and up is past 40% first dose. So every age group is over half way to 80% first dose, a leading indicator of reaching 80% fully vaccinated.

NSW has reached 90.3% first dose for 50+ (the first state to reach 90% for this) and 66.73% (over 2/3) fully vaccinated for the same age group.

VIC has reached 85.22% first dose for 50+ and 90.19% first dose for 70+ and should go past 70% first dose for 16+ when today's numbers are released tomorrow.

Nope, Public transport only operates in limited geography, at certain times of the day. Not a good analogy.

Those who choose not to be vaccinated wont be excluded from everywhere, but they will have significantly less access to events and venues (especially indoors ones) where physical distance cant be maintained, certain jobs etc. And may have to wear masks.

No difference really to requiring people to wear safety gear on worksites, hold licenses to safely operate certain machinery, be 18+ to consume alcohol.

I appreciate your concerns.Australians rejected the Australia card on privacy concerns and the vaccine passports seem a bigger invasion of privacy and will be used to divide us.It also is getting the anti vaxxers more ammunition.
On the other hand as a physician I would like to see everyone vaccinated.
