What's your favourite aircraft type?

J Class :

Best Intl J, so far - B747, QF, SYD-HKG-SYD upstairs exit row seating.
Special mention Intl J - A330, UL (short hop CMB-MAA-CMB)
Best Dom J, so far - A330 (obviously), 737 J isn't J, but Y with extra legroom :)

PE Class :

B777, CX, PE, HKG-MAA-HKG
A380, QF, PE, HKG-SYD-HKG

Y Class :

Best Intl Y - A380 QF & B777 (?) CX

Special mention - B787, QF, only if it is a early AM arrival into SYD/MEL - love to see those tinted windows. When I was half asleep, I looked out the tinted window and thought the sun was actually a moon (or I thought it was the light from another aircraft, or something to that effect, mind me, I was half asleep) and it was still night time. I only realised it was day, when the FA brought brekkie :)

Best Dom Y - 717 & D-8, both QF - short hops, CBR-SYD-CBR. I think I prefer the 717 & D-8's because they are smaller than a 737 and have a sort of cozy, snuggly (unsure, if this is the right word) setting than the 737 ...

Never been on a 767 or E-190 or older aircrafts ... never seen a Concorde in real life, only seen in pics ...

I do not really follow aircraft types but I have a preference for any wide body in J or F. Looking at MFR24 the aircraft that comes in 3rd is the a380 (68) followed by the 767 (56). All the a380 flights have been with EK, SQ and QF and all in J or F. The 767 I seem to recall most of these were domestic and a few to NZ. I travelled an a JL767 in Feb 19 PEK-HND, I remember this flight as it was the first 767 I had been on in years. I also recall a few flights that were a bit more out of the ordinary that included sitting in the back Learjet 28 (these are small) and backseat rides in a PC-9, Macchi Jet, and a Harrier. Have only seen a Concorde in NYC.

I'm not sure I understand why there is so much lover to 747 upstairs in J. The exit row legroom is nice and there is the "its upstairs" factor, but in reality, having to lug your stuff up and down the stairs plus the delay in disembarking is annoying. Additionally it's much more cramped and like being in a small narrow body aircraft. I much preferred the nose section in J on the 747.

A nice ride to SCL on one of the Glitterati pews of the old first class cabin at J rates was atmospheric .
I always feel safer in the 747's , it is (was) noisy upstairs but the service always seemed better.
The misplaced air vents on the exit row bugged me… (first world annoyances)
The 380 wins as my favourite ride , so quiet and somnolent , the perception of flight almost absent.

The A380 would get my vote for being the most pleasant to do long haul flights in. Otherwise, I don't have any real favourites; as long as it gets me there in one piece and reasonable level of comfort I'm ok with it. Although there were a few aircrafts types that were memorable, for the wrong reasons, that I wouldn't rush to get back on - Ilyushin Il-62 from Singapore to London via Moscow, Mil Mi-8 in and around Western Pakistan, and a range of old, light aircraft, Beechcraft Barons, legions of Cessnas

I think, and this is my personal opinion/feeling as to why some prefer the upstairs on a 747 is because ;

1. The Cabin feels exclusive, given it's size and the limited number of pax you need to share the space with. I think it's the thought that there are X number of J seats on this flight, but we got our own space with only Y number of pax to share it with. I felt exclusive when I flew 747 upstairs

2. And for the reasons you mentioned, such as, moving stuff up & down, delay in disembarking etc, seasoned travelers prefer the pointed end rather than upstairs - this means less number of people in the top deck when flying mid-week or peak business flying periods of the week. Again, brings in the exclusivity

3. Given the less number of inhabitants in the top deck, the crew give (or feels like they give) better attention and hence translates to better service? For instance, I enjoyed my trip. I was one of the 4 pax in the top deck and I never saw the bottom of my wine glass :)

4. Leisure travelers such as myself, prefer to take things at my own pace. So disembarking immediately or relatively quickly ain't important for me... again, gives the feeling that you are relaxingly taking the time you need to get off the aircraft, in other words. no one is rushing you to leave ... and there is no point carrying your luggage and standing on the stairs when those in the nose area are still disembarking ...

Again, very personal thoughts/opinions ... and I hardly do international work trips, so any intl trip is leisure for me. With domestic though, different story. Always choose Row 4 when flying Y to disembark quickly, that is when I don't fly Dom J for work

I liked 767 for commuting but we didn't get much of them in SA mainly 737

The EK F on the A380 is up there for my flying happy place

So my favourite cabins.
F on SQ A380.
F on JAL B777

Haven'y flown long haul J for a while but did like QF J upstairs on the B747.Even better was in the navigators seat way back when a 747 flew to Bali out of SYD at sunset.

Regional J.CX on the A350.

Y none but worst QF B787.

Well, for sensations :

Dornier - high wing turbo prop maybe 25 pax, designed for Stol ops. Don’t know the model but flew several times with Milne Bay Air, Moresby to Misima and back early 2000s. I mentioned to young blond Aust copilot after one milk run stop that the plane seemed to have mobs of power and really jumped into the air, and he said: watch this.. so next takeoff they wound her up really hard with the brakes on , plane quivering, nose down and then let her go. Wow, 100m down the runway and up we went. Copilot turns back from the coughpit down the aisle and says ‘how was that!’

Boeing 737 - never get tired of that ‘lift’ that comes just after takeoff. Assume it’s a speed thing - get to a certain MPH and the wing/flap combo takes over and whoosh up we go.. Always brings a smile, but there havnt been a lot of them the last 18 months..

And for comfort :

SQ in 380 suites.

Airbus Helicopters EC-130 ;)

But since planes was implied:

Riding in the cabin - A380

Riding the jump seat - B767. Only happened once but it was a windy day into WLG... way back when that was allowed.

Funny thing about Wellington is that it was more scary when it wasn’t windy. That runway was short. I think it’s a bit longer now than when I was flying there. Nightmare scenario…calm, wet runway, flap issue on 767.

Anyone flown on an Airbus A220? I haven’t yet, but I’ve heard they’re also pretty comfortable in economy with a spacious 2-3 layout.
We did a short hop FRA - GVA with LH (Euro J) about 3 years ago. Pleasant enough, reasonably quiet.

Favourite aircraft type: A380.
Least favourite (relatively recently) Emirates B777 in Y.
Surprise honourable mention - Garuda A330 in J

Upstairs at the small economy section of the pre-reconfigured QF A380s. Row 32 A-B or J-K perfect for myself and my wife!

A380 - but not just any, though - EY (!) EK or QR F
A350 my favourite 'everyday ride'.
For once we are in complete agreement.
Loved the first class apartments on EY A380s.
But I will never forget sitting in 1A on a LATAM A350 as we glided almost silently descending over the massive city of São Paolo at night.

Anything with propellors - jets can't match the initial surge down the runway when the props bite.
I'm old enough to have flown in Convairs - one flight (Melb to Canberra) the pilot must have thought he was Biggles when he hedgehopped over the Brindies on the way in.

But I like A380s, and I agree with the nostalgia factor re: 747s.
