Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Does any body actually believe for one second the states are going to follow this? Do you think WA won’t slam down it’s border on whatever justification it feels like regardless of former agreements (like it does now) and conversely does anyone honestly think if NSW achieves 70 or 80% vaccination first it is going to wait and not push for (and likely get) international flights just because another state is dragging the chain?

I think that goes without saying given the language used was ‘agreement in principle’ and was repeated 1000x in the presser = people nodding saying sure whatever, then change their minds if it suits their re-election chances later… cough usual suspects WA and QLD will make it up on the run….

What will happen though which I’m pinning all my hopes on - is as we get higher and higher numbers people will care less and less about covid as they and their friends, family will be vaxxed.

People will get more and more pissed off with the state governments (the ones imposing restrictions) and there will be a massive backlash against them.

The protests we are seeing in Sydney at the
moment will be nothing… there will just be mass civil disobedience…. Even more so than in Sydney right now….

And because the premiers only care about being re-elected they will read the room and react.

It will be the tipping point. And I suspect it will come way before 70%

I'm not seeing much evidence of non-compliance except in Sydney?

There were a couple of hundred people who marched in Melbourne out of 4+ million. Hardly a tipping point - except to tip public sentiment against those protesting.

Scrap restrictions so you can go clubbing... but cut then have to deal with the cutting of elective surgery because you have half your hospital staff in isolation?

Re-read what I wrote and you should understand what I’m predicting is going to happen amongst the population as people become vaccinated, I respectfully think you have missed the point.

And there were more than a few hundred in Melbourne last week.

I’d also avoid pinning all the non compliance on people living in Sydney. Sticking the boot in is not helpful to those suffering right now in Sydney and to suggest that is the only place non compliance is present is quite farcical…

QLD Presser.

6 local cases in Qld. So 7 cases in Qld in this cluster so far.

Linked to two cases in HQ, but link from that to the others is as yet unknown. Medical student expected to have infected the student's household. but is not confirmed. Medical student has been to many venues/sites.

All the Delta Strain.

3 Day Lockdown to start at 4pm today in 11 LGAs

I think I got the point, i just don’t agree that there’s a growing sentiment against lockdowns in the way you suggest.

People understand that while we have unvaccinated people, the risk of cutting elective surgery, or curtailing numbers at important events like weddings and funerals, or placing unfair burden on our frontline health workers remains.

Sure, there might be non-compliance in other areas, but they’re not in the middle of an outbreak. It’s not a case of sticking the boot in… it’s calling it out. If they are suffering, it’s because they didn’t follow the - admittedly very lax - rules. And it’s not just those being non-compliant… everyone has a part to play. If your friends tell you they’re catching up with a friend for coffee under the guise of exercise… call that out!

I just hope that it isn't what I thought yesterday that there a whole lot of cases out in the community. I worried that there might be a super spreader event at some stage

If you're going to do it...best to make it ASAP...not midnight etc. Weren't 15 people infected at Ms Frankie restaurant in Melbourne on the evening of the 15th? Post announcement last hurrah. I did the same with 6 friends that night. Probably not a great idea!

QLD PRESSER

The two HQ cases flew in on 29 June.

One on day 1 and one on day 5 test.

One went hospital (ie Qld quarantine cases in hospital) and then to WA, and the other To Buderim.

Exact links beyond this are not yet known.

Can you just explain for us where the Queensland student got COVID from?

CHO Jeannette Young has just been asked this question.

It's a little complicated, and it's still early days, but this is how Dr Young answered:

"Right. So, we've had two cases in hotel quarantine that arrived in Brisbane on 29 June. So, they both flew - one flew from Indonesia, one flew from the UK - they both ended up in Singapore, they were both on the same flight, but they were three rows apart, opposite sides of the plane, those two people. Then they flew into Brisbane and went into hotel quarantine at the Rydges South Bank. Now, one of them tested positive day one after arrival. The second tested positive day five after arrival. And they both have exactly the same genome sequence.

"So, I think the first person's given it to the second person. But they could have done that in Singapore, they could have done it on the plane, they could have done it in hotel quarantine. Then one person was transferred to Gold Coast University Hospital for care, because as you know all positive cases we admit to hospital.

"So, one went to the Gold Coast University Hospital for care. Once he finished his treatment, he went home to WA. The second person was admitted to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Once he finished his treatment, he went home to Buderim.

So, I think that one of those two cases has led to transmission to someone - who I don't know - who has then led to further transmission and eventually I think the most likely scenario is this medical student has acquired it. I don't know how.

"Then the most likely scenario is they have given it to the student they were tutoring - the 17-year-old that we announced yesterday - who has then given it, or possibly the medical student has given it to the other four people in that household."

Vic Presser: 2 new cases

1 is a close contact of the traffic controller's partner. No infectious time in the community.

Second case is a traffic controller that share car with first traffic controller. Tier 1 exposure site is from this case. This case had very limited time in the community.

All other Moonee Valley Staff have tested negative, but all are in 14 day quarantine.

No link yet as to who infected the first traffic controller.

The increasing numbers of people protesting, respectfully means what you think doesn’t really matter, it’s just a fact.

As to whether it is even broader than that, time will tell as it continues to build outside of physical protests and will just grow as more people become vaccinated…

Fifty-eight cases were in isolation throughout their infectious period and 11 cases were in isolation for part of their infectious period.
Twenty-one cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 120 cases remains under investigation.

So 32 infectious in the community, BUT 120 cases are still under investigation.

There are currently 203 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 53 people in intensive care, 27 of whom require ventilation.
