But since the question was about Melbourne papers, I would suggest the Herald Sun (or is it the Sun Herald? Senior's moment possible).

Not sure whether it would reach the pages of the Australian. Steve Creedy seems to do most of the airline work there.

The HeraldSun in Melbourne has an article on Frequent Flyers today and quotes a user of frequentflyer.com.au (do not have the paper in front of me).

The article was in relation to MP's airpoints earn and their use for personal flight. The article (and HeraldSun in general over the past week) takes a stance that MP's should from Y not J domestically.

It even mentions that airlines should/could offer Fares for MP's at a lower price that did not accumulate points. It goes on to add that Qantas would rather allocate points at the higher fare and take the chance that some points will never be used.

If more media exposure (hopefully positive) will bring more people into AFF to gain more knowledge, then Lindsay Wilson did a fantastic work. Afterall, this website is free in general and does relies on traffic and and people clicking on links and maybe becoming premium members.

Newspaper works both ways, sure they can write trash, but you can also see it as a free marketing tool for AFF! Afterall, now Amex is using AFF in their marking material, surely that is a good thing!

Platy, I'm just getting the teensiest of hints that you're not too keen on the idea.

I think that people are entitled to make up their own mind about the accuracy and legitimacy of News Ltd's reporting.

Personally, if I want serious news, I'll go look at Reuters or the BBC. If I want a poorly written inaccurate comic complete with spelling and punctuation errors, then it's the Courier Mail all the way....

Indeed, I totally agree with you. You are absolutely correct in what you say. However, IMHO, the moderators have two hats - as an individual member of the forum with a right of personal expression AND as a moderator

The moderator has a degree of power not shared by other members (in that they can "moderate" and that's not necessarily a bad thing, in fact usually good, but...)

The moderators are not shy to voice their opinions on this forum whilst they still have the title 'moderator' against their posts.

Now in Lyndsay's case above he said "he had been called upon". what does that mean? Because he represents AFF??? IF so (and I don't know yet) does that then imply, when it goes to print, that his PERSONAL views are somehow representative of the forum collective?????

I'm NOT suggesting anything untoward, just asking questions to understand why someone has a particular opinion and in what capacity they are talking to the media...

...at the end of the day it is up to Admin and the Moderators to run the forum in any way they see fit!

I think you might be reading too much into the wording of Lindsay's reply. I personally wouldnt waste my breath talking to News Ltd on this topic but thankfully as I think Lindsay and I share the same view of QF's changes (both being AA members ) he can give me views without me having to expend energy

Absolutely correct! I am doing two things, sharing my personal opinion, based on topics I know a lot about that the OP has written about previously, that the OP is unlikely to pen anything of constructive value.

I have no problem with folk having an alternate point of view - I am curious to elicit their rationale, if that is forthcoming!

Th BBC used to be a very competent news organisation when I lived in the UK. I'm not sure if standards have prevailed as senior executive positions have increasingly been infested with he bean counter types (which goes back to the appointment of Alastair Milne as Director General in the 80s and Thatcher's hatred of the Beeb) - but that's totally OT!!!

I did contact a number of AFF members (moderators and non-moderators) who I thought could add value to her story. I know Lindsay spoke to her, others might have as well. There is no "representative" AFF view. People spoke in their personal capacity. The fact that they might, or might not, be an AFF moderator is irrelevant.

At the end of the day AFF is all about sharing knowledge and opinion. If this knowledge is disseminated through the media, so be it.

And that is exactly as it happened. I allowed admin to give my mobile number to Lorna, who then rang me and we spoke for about 20 mins. She then had a photographer come around to my office to grab a couple of snaps.

If it helps bring all sides of the debate to the article, then great - that's why I am looking forward to reading a balanced approach. If not, then so be it. Again, the changes don't affect me as much as it does the person who had cards that automatically swept their points into the QFF program but won't from 1 April) because they are saving up their points to send the familt to Disneyland. I sweep mine to SPG then onto AA, where I perceive the "burn ratio" to be better even through there is the dimunition of points because of the flow through process). These are my personal views and in no way relate to my membership of (or Moderator position within) AFF.

I am unhappy with QFF making the decision to direct sweep cards only and I am not happy but not to the point where I want to criticise them in the media in any way.

Qantas is entitled to make this decision and as a consequence will lose any opportunity from me to to transfer Amex MR points to QFF. Their loss not mine....
