Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Bizarre in a discussion forum. But you seem rattled so will leave it there. But I may use this one next time you express an opinion.

Im not remotely rattled nor concerned about this "possible but in no way proven" HQ case. I simply stated the process.

You seem to have concerns over the timeliness of the process, so rather than direct your questioning of the process at me, I directed you to someone who can do something about it.

I mention this is relation to your question to me, not your opinion. You asked me "how it is not prudent", Ive already expressed my opinion as to why i felt its not urgent, its fine that you disagree but if you want an answer to why the decision was made you need to ask the decision maker.

So we have the driver (delta strain) and his wife and a customer who dined at the same venue.

The other one need to be retested "A man in his 40s tested positive in the Baulkham Hills area. However, NSW Health is still determining whether it's a false positive or an old case as the viral load in his system was "very low".

From ABC Blog - the driver might have breached guidelines in addition ot not bothering to get vaccinated:

NSW Police will investigate whether limousine driver 'complied with existing health orders'

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says police will investigate whether the man in his 60s — the first case announced yesterday — complied with existing health orders.
"And that's the police investigation that will determine to what extent that driver complied within existing health orders, which is very important.
"Which know in no matter how good any system is, no system is perfect and no system is foolproof against the pandemic."

Pressed on that, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said while he wouldn't be commenting on specifics, "what I will remind all drivers who pick people up from the airport more broadly is that you have obligations and your obligations are legal".

"And they are to get saliva-tested every day and to make sure you wear appropriate PPE.
"If you don't do that, you're breaching the orders and the police will investigate you and, of course, there are possible consequences of that but the worst consequences are, of course, that the virus can enter via what might otherwise be a complete non-compliance and just plain slackness."

The other states like to tell NSW when it's under-panicking.

From the ABC

First case in NSW outbreak confirmed as Delta strain

Dr Kerry Chant says the first case — a man in his 60s who drives a limousine as part of his work, who is involved in transporting international flight crew — has tested positive to the Delta strain.

His wife also tested positive yesterday.

"And that this strain does not match anything that's been uploaded in Australia at this time, but it does match perfectly a sequence that's been uploaded from the US and so that fits with that plausible hypothesis, whilst we do test flight crew on the way in, there's always a chance," she said.
As we heard a short time ago, a woman in her 70s who attended the Belle Cafe in Vaucluse has also tested positive.

Dr Chant said that person attended the cafe at the same time as the driver on June 13.

"We consider all people who were at that cafe at the same time as the driver to be close contact and they must all be tested and isolate for 14 days after that visit. Because we've had transmission at that cafe, we're urging everyone to take the request for testing seriously."

Stockholm syndrome is strong with some in Victoria. NSW has been consistent see no appetite for nor reason to develop a trigger finger wrt lockdowns now.

So in NSW delay is not something to at all be questioned?
This is what is already done, I've not called for anything different.

You are all assuming a huge 10 day delay, but they contact people (they knew exactly who else was staying there and who had worked) before they made public/media announcements. Once the results come back, a person reviews and assesses risk and seeks advcie from Dr Chant re what to do.

The extra requests were made and i hate this term "out of a an abundance of caution" not because there is any real worry about community exposure given the positives were never in the community.

If you have a problem with the genomic test turn around times in NSW, write to your local MP or Dr Chant.

Has Dr Chant, or anyone else from NSW Health, released any detail on the process of the genomic testing being as you have described??

And yet In Vic it is entirely ok to do so?
Also advising the genomics on this one has taken a while. Genomic links usually confirmed within 24-48 hours, this family has been known positives for longer than that. - why the delay. Did govt not want to admit they have had another leak?

The person arrived on 1st, tested negative on 2nd, returned a positive on 5th and was immediately moved to health hotel. That is not a 10 day delay. Or are you now saying we need to test HQ inmates daily? No state does that.

The 10 days delay I was quite clearly referring to was in terms of the genomic sequencing being completed and acted upon. We know it was 10 days as the NSW Media release issued on June 15th stated when action was begun to act on it.

June 5th PCR test result available.

June 15th genomic sequencing result available which then spurred NSW into further action. My assumption is that the results were not available earlier as otherwise NSW Health would have acted earlier. If even they were available and were ignored (and I do believe that at all) then key point is when was the data acted upon. It was 10 days after the PCR Test result was known.

You state that genomic sequencing is only done quicker if rushed? Is this actually so? Where was that reported.

And is if so, why was it not rushed as cases in adjoining rooms should have made it a rush.

So in NSW delay is not something to at all be questioned?

No one is trying to stop anyone from questioning anything but to get you to direct questions at the right people.

In pressers Dr Chant frequently calls out when genomics are being fast tracked, it has always been in community cases, as it is her that tells the lab when they need to prioritize certain cases due to potential community impact. Regular viewers of the NSW pressers have herd this many times.

And yet In Vic it is entirely ok to do so?

Different situation and entirely consistent with my point. When its a community case (as that quote related to) processing those results should always be give top priority and in NSW they are. I could ask why you think several days for genomic testing for a community cases who travelled widely was ok, but a case already in a medi hotel should be more of a concern?

And is if so, why was it not rushed as cases in adjoining rooms should have made it a rush.

In your opinion. I've already stated my opinion on why I do not think a rush wasn't needed.

The person/people who first received the PCR advise also obviously didn't agree with you re the need to rush. But then again for all we know the original PCR test may not have been able to be sequenced and other samples might have been needed.

Once known the priority would have been to firstly contact the other guests on the floor personally before making a media release, noting that nothing in the media release asked the public to do anything, just advising what had already been done.

As to known travellers.

1/ Genomic sequencing does not always work for all cases for a number of reasons. In particular a live virus may not be able to be grown

2/ Some outbreaks such as Avalon were probably due to not testing everyone that was likely to be a carrier. ie aircrew. We also know that not all diplomats get tested, and so again no genomic sequencing..

If there was any delay in publicly reporting it, it may well be as a different result (ie strain) was obtained that it was rerun to verify it was correct.

I guess we can refer you to your own response when we questioned the VIC delay in testing

Isn't that what you have when a potential transmission event MAY have occurred in HQ?

Not necessarily. In this event both positives were not out in the community, they were still in iso when they tested positive and were moved to an health hotel and no definitive proof that it was HQ transmission given the travel history.

The other travelers in the hotel on the same floor were further away (= lower risk) and staff have PPE (and should have been fully vaccinated) and are tested every shift so further spread not likely. If NSW Health thought it likely they wouldnt have issued a test and iso until a negative casual contact directive, but a test and iso for 14 days regardless close contact directive.

This is very different to the case where the Vic man was infected on departure of HQ in SA, and wandering around Melbourne for a week before becoming ill and getting tested.

(just about the discussion not about the cases, that is not a laughing matter)

The person who contracted it in the Sydney cafe was 70 so should be vaccinated l, if they aren’t I’d be asking why not....
Broadly agree, although with having only become entitled early April, and eligible for AZ then may not have received second dose as yet.

What you have there is hindsight...and after the fact. What you referred to was 'potential' community impact. The above event demonstrates the potential for community impact from such an event.
