Vaccine Rollout in Australia - personal accounts.

Feeling so grateful and excited that in just over 3 weeks my entire family will have been fully vaccinated !!!
Exactly. My +1 and 18 & 20 yo are fully vaccinated with Pfizer. I'm fully vaccinated with AZ. My parents will get their 2nd dose of AZ in a couple of weeks time...pretty happy with that! Now if only there was a vaccine for Norovirus...my workplace is infested with it :(

Lymph nodes around my collarbone may be starting to recede finally, just over two weeks post the first pfizer. Very hard and very painful, but seem to be noticing them less so hopefully a good sign.

Wonder what sort of reaction I will have to jab 2....

Sadly there’s no good evidence that this assertion is correct
But it certainly is evidence-based as the vax keeps you out of ICU. There is now a blood test to identify whether severe pain should be investigated for AZ clotting.

They're working on improved vaccines. I expect this will become a regular or yearly jab and combined with the flu.

Except that people who have no vaccine reaction are also kept out of ICU after vaccination.

I felt like dying and spent ages telling myself that this meant I was more likely to have good protection against covid, until a friendly neighbourhood immunologist told me otherwise

I am working on a new theory that your side effects from the vaccine somehow mirror the severity of effects one would get from a Covid infection (ie most people are asymptomatic, a smaller group with mild symptoms and smaller still with severe symptoms, etc). Personally I’m now describing myself as having “long covid (vaccine side effects)”. However, as I don’t believe there can ever be objective evidence in this space, it will have to continue as a tongue in cheek theory indefinitely 😉

At least once fully vaccinated, any effects of COVID should be mild to none, with no hospitalisation expected. 😀

Unfortunately not completely true but unlikely.

"With more than 169 million people in the USA vaccinated against COVID-19 with one of three U.S. FDA Authorized vaccines, Breakthrough Cases confirmed by the U.S. CDC continue to increase.

As of June 1, 2021, the CDC received reports from 47 U.S. states and territories of 3,016 patients with COVID-19 vaccine Breakthrough infections who were hospitalized or died.

And about 79% of the Breakthrough Cases were seniors (65 yr).

In total, there have been 2,854 hospitalized or 535 fatal cases confirmed. The CDC reported 16% of 535 fatal cases were reported as asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19."

That's really great, pity we over 65's in Aust can't get it.

I now have my vaccination certificate from the Australian Govt, but I still don't feel particularly confident with the AZ vaccine and the newer strains of Covid (eg Delta).

Fortunately, hospitalisation after vax has been rare in the US, as at 1 May. Not zero, of course, but 1,000 per 100 million:

Getting COVID-19 after vaccination is incredibly rare, CDC report finds

That article doesn't agree with the CDC figures.
Hospitalized or fatal vaccine breakthrough cases reported to CDC3,459
Female1,691(49%)
People aged ≥65 years2,642(76%)
Asymptomatic infections617(18%)
Hospitalizations*3,275(95%)
Deaths†603(17%)

*802 (24%) of 3,275 hospitalizations reported as asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19.
†100 (17%) of 603 fatal cases reported as asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19.

Previous data on all vaccine breakthrough cases reported to CDC from January–April 2021 are available.

And more here.

The CDC no longer counts case numbers just hospitalisations and deaths.

Again in the real world -UK stats -AZ does just as well as Pfizer.Have already posted a study showing Pfizer also doesn't do well with the Delta variant.

Yes. It depends of course as to which articles are plucked from where, to make things look better or worse.

Statistically I believe that when my two doses have ‘kicked in’, the worst I could get from COVID is mild symptoms to none, and that the hospitalisation risk is almost zero. And that the rest of Oz will be somewhat similar.

As for those who will not be dosed, then I guess ‘it is what is’ as someone once said.

Good luck! And I really mean that.

We went to Sydney Olympic Park. The teens and my eldest daughter all had their first Pfizer shot.
Absolutely impressive set up. Easy to check-in with the QR codes.

Our RN was surprised and delighted to be vaccinating a 16 year old, she had never done someone that young before and had to check with her manager that it was ok.

Bring it on!!! (Except for more of the 3 hour drive that was the trip home in the holiday traffic 🤣)
It is such a relief! Dr FM, Master FM and his partner are all fully vaccinated. Master FM celebrated by taking a trip out of San Francisco, although he still seemed to keep away from crowds and go hiking :). 29 year old daughter and SIL get their second AZ jabs on Saturday. Will be very glad to have them all safe. Mr FM and I have to wait until 15 July for our second ones, but it’s not that long.

Just had my second dose of Pfizer, it is a very straight-forward process as they know I had one already and just checked my medicare card and confirmed I had no adverse effect from the first dose.

They did tell me the second dose of Pfizer can be worse than the first dose, we shall see on that!

I got the vaccination certificate a few hours after my second dose, although at the moment it doesn't do anything beyond getting a shiny certificate that I can display on the phone, hopefully this part will change over time and we can travel more freely after vaccination.
